I have been working at Fidelity Investments full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great company, with lots of resources. Fantastic benefits and good pay. Company is evolving, and well poised for the next phase of industry shifts. Incredibly strong brand in financial services. Highly ethical and virtuous company. Privately owned, less susceptible to market cycles.

    Cons

Big companies can be slow to change, but Fido is heading in right direction. The fundamental belief in active management from senior leaders sometimes slows the pace of innovation and is too often the reason for decisions vs. data or industry trends. Like everywhere in financial services, expense management is intensely tight.

    Advice to Management

Too often business unit leaders have little to no expertise in their vertical, and are just Fidelity lifers who get repurposed. Consider hiring more external candidates with proven track records in the unit or initiative where they’re needed.

I worked at Fidelity Investments full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Progressive company trying to reinvent itself for the new age of financial services. Great benefits and comp packages

    Cons

Some administrative areas of the firms are still in the old culture and haven’t been transformed. Additional senior executive need to be mobilized. Still a lot of passive aggressiveness and clicks, limited transparency and openness. Too focused on who likes you. Other BUs that are revenue focused are in a much better place.

    Advice to Management

Focused more on culture and true mobility within the mid to senior leadership role with tools and program that truly get at the challenges in leveraging the talents across the firm. Else risk loosing more great people.

I have been working at Fidelity Investments full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Great benefits and stable income.

    Cons

It’s an assembly line of 400 client households rotating through, while doing your own prospecting and a lot of account maintenance babysitting. The time available for client relationships/retention and sales is minimal and unsustainable.

    Advice to Management

400 households per advisor is a poor sales and retention business model.

    Pros

Great benefits. Company is really trying to be the best in the industry

    Cons

Constant pressure for more activity. it’s never enough. Feels like a grind. Managers in all branches play favorites with the leads

    Advice to Management

Hire self motivated advisors and trust them rather then micromanage them

I have been working at Fidelity Investments full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Fidelity has a good brand and most of the employees are smart and want to do the right thing. It is nice that it is a private company with huge wallets which allows them to invest when the market (stock or job) is down. Good place to work out of school and get some good experience by moving around and trying different roles. There is also a student debt benefit which is good for anybody that can leverage it. Due to... their volumes, they will continue to make lots of money.

    Cons

They have flattened the organization as part of the "agile transformation" and expect you to make lots of lateral moves (forget climbing the ladder unless you are very junior). They have pushed out most of the good senior level leaders or bought them out via VBO. They are catering to young workers who they can pay less and shuffle from one group to another. Leadership is not engaging or inspiring.

    Advice to Management

You have treated your employees pretty badly the last 2 years by making them apply for their current jobs, randomly placing them in different groups, etc. The PEOPLE of Fidelity are what makes it successful. Adding pet insurance or air hockey tables doesn't make up for the stress you put employees through (or the diminishing compensation plan).

I worked at Fidelity Investments full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great emphasis on continuing education for Financial Consultants,. The company always emphasizes creating financial plans that puts clients in a better situation according to generally accepted principles of financial planning.

    Cons

It’s best to join the company young and completely buy in to Fidelity’s view of how financial plans should be drawn up. Those with a tremendous amount of external experience may struggle vs those who completely drink the Fidelity Kool Aid. There is almost no flexibility or creativity among Financial Consultants. If Fidelity we’re managing their business 100% according to plan, it would not matter at all which... FC you worked with because every single one of them would offer you precisely the same solutions.

    Advice to Management

There is very little to improve on. Fidelity is an amazingly well run organization. I believe the constraints on FC creativity are a necessary evil caused by the sheer heft of 6 or 7 trillion dollars of assets under administration and their business model.
