I have been working at GenMark Diagnostics full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people in R&D are great, my coworker brings snack all the time and honestly, it's a big factor in why I'm still here. Also the work is intellectually stimulating and challenging, there is never a dull day, plenty of long days though. Also getting to drink a beer at my desk after a long day while still doing data analysis at 6pm is pretty sweet... if that was actually allowed.. but it's not so that's going in the... 'cons'. Benefits (healthcare, vacation/sick time) are actually pretty good but compensation (salary, stocks) is not. They also rarely reward good employees for working excessive hours and contributing in major projects so their "compensation" is lacking pretty severely (which is why there is such a high turnover rate and they keep losing good people).

    Cons

Long hours (45-60 hours/week average), ridiculous and stressful timelines, terrible senior leadership overall with the exception of a few (actually just one) who seems to know what they're doing and actually have decent insight as to how the company needs to organize and operate. Pay is generally below average and they try to compensate with stocks but those are worthless most of the time. High turnover rate as well... so it's hard to get long-term goals accomplished when the people you coordinate with leave every 6-18 months. They will lay off the people working hard to design this product but upper management will still get outrageous bonuses. Seems unethical really.

"Company with good intentions and high ambitions but poorly organized and inadequately run on a day to day basis"

I have been working at GenMark Diagnostics full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - great products in the pipeline with a lot of promise - many company sponsored fun events to boost morale - Bagel Wednesdays - Alcohol served at company's happy hours - this is shallow but... there are a lot of good-looking people, especially the guys, at this company. This is no exaggeration. Many can easily be considered models. Plenty of eye candy that, thankfully, still works at GenMark

    Cons

    - the company needs to decide what it wants to be: a small mom and pop shop, or a legitimate big boy company. - there are several old gen-probe/hologic employees at this company and they seem to be fixated with their previous employer. Reality check: This is GenMark and we don't have the same budget as your old employer to do things like they used to be at Gen-Probe/Hologic. - processes that often aren't... implemented poorly. there is a lot of poor management especially in the manufacturing and operations side - very high turnover. there's a very good reason why employees keep leaving and that is due to the unrealistic expectations, employees feel like they're not being listened to, and poor management styles.

    Advice to Management

Be realistic with your goals. Weed out the poor management. Listen to your employees.

    Pros

Amazing technology and impact on patient care is huge- can literally save lives. Brilliant people in many departments. Celebrations New manufacturing facility is impressive yet not much common area available for breaks Stock

    Cons

Long hours & huge expectations can feel thankless No 401 K match 10 days Vacation is less than most companies are offering Pay Corporate office could use an upgrade - feels old People don't talk much to one another... always heads down working. Feels very stressful and tense. High Turnover Many good "nice" people leave because they know they can be treated better elsewhere Human Resources doesn't seem to... care about employees and plays favorites. Act very cold and unapproachable.

    Advice to Management

Be progressive. Be open to new ideas. Lead by example. Listen to employee feedback & act on engagement survey versus lip service and only offering to do things that don't cost any money. Many employees are looking for other jobs. Act like a grown up public company - you're getting too big to act like a mom & pop start up shop.

I worked at GenMark Diagnostics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pay, free coffee, bagels on Wednesday, cafe on site, work with a few good people, opportunities to growth with company, good opportunity to gain experience. Good location.

    Cons

Favoritism, management, overworked, high turnover rate, disorganized, drama, gossiping between co-workers, work almost every weekend, a lot of temp employees.

    Advice to Management

More communication, establish a solid training plan for new hires in the Manufacturing Department. Get rid of favoritism and give employees more room for growth and improvement.

Everything! SLT is terrible. No work , life, Balance. It's a numbers game. The Management does not care about the people. There is a constant high turnover all year long. Do not work here unless you don't have a life outside of work.

    Advice to Management

Change ALL OF YOUR SLT!!! Quit burning out your employees!!!

I worked at GenMark Diagnostics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

•Amazing talent in R&D, engineering and marketing •Spectacular product with the potential to revolutionize the industry •Converts temporary employees to full-time employees •Yearly Christmas party at the Hilton •Bagels and pastries on Wednesdays •Free coffee and sodas •Catered all employee meetings once per quarter

    Cons

•Very high turnover rate •Company is not transparent. It’s difficult to get invited to meetings and therefore hard to understand project statuses and information necessary to do your job effectively •No quality engineers so many of the technical aspects of quality have to be covered by other departments •Low involvement, guidance and ownership from quality assurance which is important at a medical device... company •Below market value compensation •Doesn't allow remote work •Performance reviews aren't based on individual performance but company wide goals. This is a problem because the company sets very aggressive unattainable goals and then come review time the bonus pool is very small. •Bad benefits: No 401(k) matching, no tuition reimbursement program, no employee referral bonus program, no market adjustments for pay, very small bonuses •R&D and manufacturing are forced to work weekends for long stretches of time

    Advice to Management

Do more to retain employees. Improve employee benefits and compensation and this would be an awesome place to work. Set realistic yearly goals so that employees have a chance at getting end of year bonuses that reward them for their hard work.

I worked at GenMark Diagnostics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Bright talent from the scientific development and customer relations standpoint. Eager and dedicated employees. Great atmosphere and energy that resonates throughout the company.

    Cons

Lack of promotion from within with high turnover from those that are highly talented. Senior Leadership Team needs to convey a culture that is reflective of employee beliefs and not try to push a predefined corporate culture that is outsourced.

    Advice to Management

Delegate some of the management decisions and systems improvements to those are actually working with them. There are too many hands in the bucket on a granular level with very little direction from upper management.

I have been working at GenMark Diagnostics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Things move very fast and you are able to do a lot of different things. But the deadlines are very tight and you have to work very hard with long hours to meet these goals. You will meet a lot of good people.

    Cons

-The turnover is very high. -Company is constantly trying to improve talent, which comes at a cost of high turnover and lack of loyalty. -Very aggressive deadlines. -Small annual pay increase. -HR has more say in the hiring process than the hiring manager. -Senior Leadership Team can be very rude. -Lack of promotions

    Advice to Management

Invest in the current staff instead of always trying to improve talent by forcing turnover. Do whatever you can do reduce the high turnover.
