I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    The medical benefits were great

    Cons

Reorganization every 2 to 3 years in the research side. Some areas are hard for career development. Some management who were there for decades are stuck in old culture and not adapting to the new ways of working and supporting employees to evolve.

    Advice to Management

More care and encouragement for the level 8 employees and encourage career development from the leadership team.

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Employee benefits, private healthcare, social life, work-life balance, good company with a great reputation, opportunities to further academic studies are available, good people, great R&D facilities for Formulation purposes, no blame culture

    Cons

Poor Wage, Red tape and Bureaucracy, R&D limited by what GMS want to implement, too many "Re-Org"s and head count reductions

    Advice to Management

Improve wages to keep a hold of the best people, and give people more challenges

I have been working at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Excellent training, Most people are nice and helpful, Good work life balance

    Cons

Very little career progression for scientists Lack of appreciation for technical excellence Managment don’t know their team well enough, more focused on managing up rather than leading the team, lack of vision and leadership Promotion is based on who you know, merit based selection no longer exists Salary is low compare to other companies Too many restructure means you end up having career regression as... oppose to progression

    Advice to Management

Spend time to get to know individuals in the team, Consider and value the actual contribution of all not just those who are good at self promotion, recognise the quality of the work Be open and transparent, just because you say it, doesn’t mean you are!

Former Employee - Senior Scientist in Missoula, MT

I worked at GlaxoSmithKline full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

When the organization commits to something, they commit. If your projects become priorities, there will be support and desire for results. You will be surrounded by talented coworkers and the means to achieve your goals. When times are good the company will commit to developing the skills of the team.

    Cons

There will be initiatives that are driven by people you have not met, and have not engaged with you honestly. They will be filtered down the management chain in a game of telephone where messages can be mixed. Many of these initiatives are harmless, well-intended and a few are useful. Some are layevoffs/reorgs with an uncomfortable amount of positive spin. Patience and serenity are required.

    Advice to Management

Less is more. Changes will always be required, but do not rush into change for change sake. This underminds urgent efforts down the road. Be direct with your employees, they can take bad news and in my experience were able to innovate and invent around technical issues.
