I worked at Harrods full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Kudos, staff canteen, discount, colleagues

    Cons

Long service means nothing, business is run like a boys club in certain areas and despite a number of female leaders misogyny is still rife. Being able to suck up and talk the talk has more value than hard work. I was incredibly proud to work for Harrods but after being treated with contempt for the last five years of my career I would never recommend working here

I worked at Harrods full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The discount is good, but not good enough to justify the misery of the people and the job.

    Cons

Where to begin. I would advise anyone looking for a job in fashion or buying to not waste your time. Harrods is very backwards in terms of systems, outlook, and people management; they do not recognise your commitment and contribution, and expect you to work overtime on a very low salary. If I calculated the amount of hours I worked it would probably amount to earning less than minimum wage. The role has nothing to do with fashion, and is pretty much logistics/data entry. Unsurprisingly, your skill set doesn’t really get to develop unless you really push for more opportunities, and that doesn’t really go down well with more senior staff members. The people are horrendous, senior members of staff bully and backstab, and they have a really terrible company culture. It’s a toxic work environment and the people who do become buyers have worked so long to get there they are backstabbing and are beyond power tripping. I have never had to work in such a destructive and miserable environment, and never shall again! The treatment of staff is appalling, and despite logging concerns with HR, no action was ever taken. Avoid like the plague.

I worked at Harrods full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There were some good learning opportunities available, e.g Careers week each year with some great external speakers, such as the CEO of Kurt Geiger, Eddie the Eagle.

    Cons

Poor team culture, no social aspect, I felt very isolated in this role and met few people I found to be genuinely friendly people. Little training given other than on-the-job, which was very stilted when I first arrived as no-one seemed to have the time to tell me what to do/how to do the job. Often has to travel from Hammersmith head office to Knightsbridge head office for training which seemed a waste of time. Opportunities for progression were limited as you had to progress to Senior Buyers Clerk before becoming Assistant Buyer, and these roles were few and far between. Senior management were rarely seen and unapproachable.

I worked at Harrods full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working with selecting beautiful products and brands. Wonderful talented teams who love their product areas. Discount across the store .

    Cons

There is a lack of recognition, progression and diversity in head office. Promotions are based on favouritism rather than merit.
