Current Employee - Senior Associate in Melbourne

I have been working at Herbert Smith Freehills part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great people who are smart, friendly and approachable. Top work. Firm commitment to culture, diversity and inclusion. Ability to work flexibly assists with work life balance. Good perks like Wednesday lunches and a terrific Christmas party!

    Cons

As with any large firm at times the hours can be long at times. In some aspects you can feel more like a number in the global company, although this is not the day to day experience.

I worked at Herbert Smith Freehills full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good internal resource and exposure to large transations

    Cons

Where should I start? Endless overtime with no compensation and the management is expecting you to do so. Culture is awful if there is any. There was a person starting and leaving within 3 days!

I worked at Herbert Smith Freehills full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great first job for people straight out of law school. A large part of that being simply having a firm that large on your resume. The HSF name helps you get jobs moving forward. Although it also helps you to hone decision making and speed reading skills.

    Cons

The role itself is not something you are likely to find satisfying for more than a 4 months to, at most, year. The work environment can range from incredible to very bad depending directly on who your manager is.

I worked at Herbert Smith Freehills full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Social activities and facilities are top notch. Professional and enjoyable at first.

    Cons

Bullying culture. Creative accounting. Spineless management. Nasty HR. Personally witnessed bullying towards women, parents and minority cultures on multiple occasions. Management were pressured by HR to defend the company at all costs and victims were removed from HSF. The company has a number of diversity and inclusion partners who 'champion' these portfolios on paper only.

    Pros

Very capable colleagues who are great friends. Working with top clients

    Cons

Long hours and as a junior very little control or autonomy, easy to feel like just a resource. Work is not particularly meaningful
