Great people and place, poor administration

Pros

I loved the people, the work, and everything about the library system. Great for high school students because of the hours and wage.

Cons

The hiring process is ridiculous and worthless. Many qualified people are overlooked for outside candidates who perform better on interviews who are then let go after bad performance on the job. When even your supervisor says they wanted you for the position, that tells you something.

Pros

Good leave, benefits even for part timers, and great colleagues. Being part of a great team where everyone pulls their weight makes going to work every day a pleasure. The work is very satisfying and you get to help people every day to get the things they need. Good work-life balance, you don't have to take work home other than reading. Many of the people in administration are dedicated, friendly, helpful, and good at their jobs. There is a fair amount of variety in work and you can play to your strengths.

Cons

Some people in administration are awful with bad attitudes and no respect for their staff. A bad apple can poison the whole bunch. Pay is not great for having a Bachelor's or Master's degree. Raises are a measly 3%, even when you receive an advanced degree directly related to your job. Not much room for advancement other than moving into management, and a lot of people just don't want to do that. As with any public service job, sometimes customers are problematic.

Pros

-Excellent Benefits -Reasonable Pay, though incremental raises are all that should be expected -Extremely Stable -Plenty of Holidays

Cons

-Job progression is difficult and slow -Recent influx of over-qualified candidates (Graduate/Medical/Law degrees) applying for relatively entry-level positions -Career Path is uncertain -Low expectations for employees -Negative work environment in some departments and branches (overbearing managers, long time employees that are cynical) -Poor work ethic is not corrected, partly because of paperwork and legal hoops, but generally little effort is made to address underachievers, placing greater stress on other employees
