The internship is a rich experience, providing all kinds of resources to learn new things with great exposure. The level of transparency is great, giving an access to understand the work culture and operations in all levels of a department. It is a great place to start a career. the mentors and the co workers are encouraging and open to new ideas. On the whole a rewarding experience.

    Cons

No Cons observed during my internship period

    Pros

Cutting edge technology. Open environment. Creative and interesting problems. Illumina creates technology that is having a revolutionary impact on medicine.

    Cons

Many very smart people compete for a limited number of advancement opportunities. As a result, you could stand out and advance quicker elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

If you're going to hire so many hard working and talented people, give them titles and salaries that are competitive with other companies.

I have been working at Illumina full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

People in R&D are genuinely excited about the company and its products. The silo complaints that seem so prevalent here is, in my experience, a non-issue. The has NEVER been an instance where I have not gotten the information or help I needed from another group or department.

    Cons

HR needs to gets its act together. Hiring practices are a mess, the equity curve appears non-existent. People with similar backgrounds and vastly different levels of experience are hired at similar, sometimes inverted levels. The promo rates vary widely group to group, even in similar functions. There appear to be few checks and balances in the annual review process to ensure consistency across groups and departments. And yes, the business systems are a mess and the GBP process is, so far, a joke.

    Advice to Management

Hiring, firing, and promotions are core management functions. Define and enforce consistent policies and standards, get HR to do its job because it currently is not. Develop a bench around Jay because now he is surrounded by yes men and women and makes all the decisions.

I have been working at Illumina (More than a year)

    Pros

Bright people. Innovative technology. Unlike some bigger companies there doesn't seem to be a lot of dead weight. Most people you interact with are very good at what they do.

    Cons

Understaffed. Management changes strategy often without notice. Decisions often made at the top without involvement from others. That can leave others out of convo.

    Advice to Management

    Empower mid level leaders
