I have been working at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology full-time for less than a year

    Pros

KAUST has great equipment resources for performing scientific research. Budget is never a problem here.

    Cons

This place is super hot in the summer. Sometimes when you need to order simple equipment for your research it can take a long time to get here.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology for more than a year

    Pros

Good work environment, great facilities and equipment. Campus is safe. On-campus transportation allows the possibility to not need a vehicle.

    Cons

Lazy HR department. Double standards for Muslim and non-Muslim employees. Advertised western standard of living, but allow only a slightly less strict lifestyle than the host country. HR combs social media and the community Facebook sites and will remove anything they do not agree with, or request a meeting with a HR representative if a negative statement of the school is made. The campus operates on a "caste" system where your rank in the hierarchy dictates what level of interaction you obtain. Contract workers are often severely underpaid and treated as second-class humans. Housing is extremely poorly built and repair teams are common in the house to fix mold problems. Policies have no flexibility or adaptability; they are unable to adapt to unexpected occurrences. It is impossible to move from one position to another (i.e., from Postdoc to research scientist). Therefore, they are constantly losing good employees to other institutions.
