      Pros

KAUST has great equipment resources for performing scientific research. Budget is never a problem here.

      Cons

This place is super hot in the summer. Sometimes when you need to order simple equipment for your research it can take a long time to get here.

      Generous Pay, Extremely Political

      Pros

Pay packages at KAUST are generous, in order to entice expats to move there to work. Many amenities are very nice.

      Cons

This institution is extremely political. Most universities are -- and this one has the Saudi culture of "wasta" or "pull." Only those who kiss up, move up.

      Teacher at The Kaust School

      Pros

Very nice, smart, motivated and dedicated colleagues - spacious classrooms, plenty of teaching materials and salary.

      Cons

Administration listens to parents and students, teachers are secondary. Lots of additional responsibilities. My biggest grievance was not directly related to my job. Everyone at KAUST lives and works on the compound so if you like to disconnect from the school and students on the weekend it’s impossible unless you go off compound to Jeddah (an hour drive south) or you barricade yourself in your home. In addition, KAUST is not animal/pet friendly place. KAUST allows new employees to travel and live there with pets but be very careful if you’re accustomed to let your cat(s) roam free. Pest Control actively traps stray cats and tosses them out of the compound. Although there are community members there who try to get the university to support a sterilization program to humanely control the number of roaming cats, the institution would rather trap and toss, thereby never reducing the population and instead perpetuating a vicious cycle of suffering. This was the main reason I was relieved to leave in the end. It was too depressing and frustrating to see the cats suffer such a tragic end over and over again.

KAUST is a Great Working Environment!

      Jul 8, 2012 - Capital Program Coordinator

      Pros

The university is a great place to work, you will have an opportunity to learn about new Research and advance development. The nature of my Job as Capital Program coordinator, by review capital items for the university I learned a lot about the trend of the Research and how is being developed. This is also, my first job in a academic environment, also I am not teaching but we get lost of opportunity to learn new things every day. The community is very small and private; we have lots of time for activity.

      Cons

As newly establish academic institute you don’t expect that every process will flow as it is expected. We did face difficulties on some of our business processes. The good part is that the officials at the university are working hard to overcome these glitches and overcome any problems/obstacles. So KAUST is still newly born Research School and it will take some time to maturity, which is expected.
