I worked at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Saudis are wonderful and warm people - eager to learn if given an opportunity

    Cons

It is my opinion/view - many expats in managerial and support positions are there through nepotism and bring no value to the mission of the university or the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its all about money. There is very little effort or focus on transferring knowledge to Saudis,. Management uses every tactic to pay Saudis mediocre salaries while lining theirs and their cronies pockets. Some have left, but there are some holdouts there. Corrupt and unethical practices abound!!!

    Pros

Very nice modern campus with access to state of the art equipment. Very nice living quarters.

    Cons

Its in Saudi Arabia so unless you're used to living without pork and alcohol. You'll need time to adjust.

I worked at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology

    Pros

Pleasant enough living conditions within a security sealed off area under saudi national guard control and outside of saudi local authority control. They will spend money to get people to attend the university and have an aim to become a top ten international university, nice weather and its by the sea. A place destined to get better, it seriously cant get any worse.

    Cons

The place was built in record time - 2 years - therefore imagine building a large university and small American coastal town with all the incumbent facilities in two years with unskilled workers and sub standard materials and that is the quality of the site, however it looks great from a distance. The other unfortunate issue is the management and many Saudi employed, they want to work like the west, but really only want to have the kudos of being Saudi citizens which they will often throw out as if one should be impressed and in order to work how and when they wish, totally unmanageable and the power that goes with being citizens, but the risk and decision making given to westerners. To be honest who in the top of their field would move there to work, restricted ability to travel freely in and out the country for visiting colleagues and an ability to live outside of the expat bubble that is KAUST, also a university which is not even in the top 50. I mean would you want to put KAUST or MIT on your CV. F or the environmentalist it is a disgrace, it ignores and allows the total disregard of the Kyoto agreements to which Saudi Arabia has signed up to, also I found it very upsetting how the 3rd world workers were treated. One unbelievable case which was never addressed was the workers did not have any toilet rolls or soap to wash their hands and these were the same people managing all the facilities, it does not take a graduate to see the implications.

I have been working at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Amazing living and working culture that's totally different than the rest of Saudi Arabia, the country invested a lot in this university to make it one of the best among the world.

    Cons

It has a lot of competent and outstanding employees (number is decreasing), but the management in general is a big question-mark! which forced the best people to leave and retain only the low performers

I worked at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology

    Pros

Great pay and chance to get out of debt and save. Get to experience the world with plenty financial benefits and vacation days. My job is low stress and so is life on campus but can be boring at times. Great for young or just starting families but not so great for singles.

    Cons

Saudi Arabia can be challenging to adjust to for westerners but not too bad once adjustment period is over. Plenty chance to travel.
