I worked at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The campus is really nice, we all feel comfortable to live here. Many facilities operate, restaurant, cinema, recreational facilities etc. The view of the sea is spectacular. Good work/life balance, everything is close. About work, you have access to high class facilities. No need to bring grants, so you focus on your work.

    Cons

The quality of the restaurants is going to worse and worse, the manager for a personal reason does not want to do any improvement. Quality of teaching at school is not amazing, acceptable, but not amazing. Depending on which department you work maybe your big boss thinks that he is your god because they give you a salary and they think that you can not find a similar salary somewhere else. If you plan to work for a position which demands PhD and you have 4+ year of experience negotiate your salary, seriously be careful, you can be stuck with a low salary compared to what they can offer. It is one of the most unfair places regarding salaries, for the same work people who come from US they have better salaries than a person who comes from many other places. Rumors about many internal things at KAUST create a more negative atmosphere.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology full-time

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Adventuresome interesting coworkers. Opportunities to do things in a new way in academia. Scientists can pursue research more. Good work-life balance.

    Cons

Managed like a oil corporation, not academia. Creativity and innovation is unintentionally squashed by archaic fear based micro-management.
