I have been working at King & Wood Mallesons full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Market-leading work, very intelligent staff, good offices and amenities. Your career will develop quickly and in the right direction, provided you are willing to sacrifice everything else in your life

    Cons

Complete lack of work-life balance (which, to be honest, they are pretty up-front about - but whatever you're expecting, its worse than that), burn-out is expected and survival is an exception, "culture of excellence" means your face will be shoved in every mistake for the rest of your career and loom over you, genuine investment in anyone beneath the Senior Associate level is non-existent since they know a huge proportion of them will burn out.

I worked at King & Wood Mallesons full-time for less than a year

    Pros

With a good manager: work / life balance is possible, pay is good, good perks (gym membership, cafe), given autonomy and freedom in achieving outcomes, client-facing (and no shortage of work which is good)

    Cons

With a bad manager: overworked, no work/life balance, micromanaged, toxic environment

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at King & Wood Mallesons full-time

    Pros

    - Great culture with kind people who genuinely want to get to know you - Benefits (gym membership, flu vaccinations, generous referral scheme)

    Cons

    - Many business actions are based on tradition. It’s very hard to get a new idea implemented as all partners/heads of/managers have been around for at least a decade and are averse to change - Although remuneration is usually “above market”, it is difficult to see where performance aligns with reward. In many instances, under-performers are compensated the same as those meeting their KPIs. This is namely due to supervisors wanting to avoid having a difficult conversation - Fee earner (legal) versus Fee burner (Tech, HR, Finance etc) still exists

I worked at King & Wood Mallesons full-time for less than a year

    Pros

They give you free gym and subsidized food and coffee in their personal cafeteria.

    Cons

It has to be the most worst run top tier law firm I have ever seen. I’ve worked in a number of other law firms and they have proper processes in place from systems to precedents but kwm is all over the place. No proper support and they treat their employees like animals. It’s quite sad. If you want to kill yourself for nothing then I recommend joining kwm. They do this because they are scared of the market and are always on the back foot to try and catch up to the other five. Their partners are losing touch with the general counsels from clients so losing a fair bit of money.
