I worked at MTU Aero Engines full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This job was a great intro to the jet engine industry. The people there are hit or miss, but overall friendly. Management is nice. Easy desk job and difficult to get fired for a reasonable paycheck. Good benefits.

    Cons

The work at MTU America (AENA) is not owned by MTU AENA. Most work is essentially contract work for Pratt and Whitney or MTU Munich. Rarely will you ever own a full task, so empowerment is lacking if you want to move up and develop a fulfilling career. There are very few tasks that come along where MTU AENA is expected to own from start to finish, but the people working those tasks typically leave the company because they can do that same exact job for almost double the pay at PW. Promotions are based on your time at your desk, and even those are unimpressive when you do get them. A mid-career (5-7yr +) job title promotion will grant you a single raise of 10% or less. Once you are at a mid-career position, you ride out annual merit raises @2% year-over-year until you hit the 15 year experience mark for the next promotion, or one of the few management positions open (if you want to take a management route). Every employee there is easily replaceable, though the company will try to convince you otherwise. They flaunt the MTU Munich headquarters as a fancy building to flex MTU's wealth, but MTU doesn't own it. They actually rent out the space with a bunch of other companies.

I have been working at MTU Aero Engines full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

If you have good skills and are really engaged in the work, there are great opportunities to grow. Some newer employees want to go from newbie to manager in a few years but that's just not realistic. Those with more reasonable expectations will be happy here, building the depth and breadth of experience necessary to move up when opportunities present themselves.

    Cons

There are strengths and weaknesses to both big and small-sized companies. While not having as many opportunities as a 2000+ employee company, the company doesn't have a lot of bureaucracy. Management is readily accessible and open communication is a cornerstone of the company's success.
