    I worked at Macquarie Group

    Pros

Genuinely dynamic organisation with has somehow maintained its core culture and values for three decades. Based on share market performance arguably the best investment bank globally.

    Cons

Size has resulted in some support divisions become less connected and responsive to needs of the businesses. Maybe unavoidable.

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Staff in general is very talented and hard working.

    Cons

Global management is non-existent hence there is virtually zero coordination between regions and products. Think of five people robing a bank - thank fighting over the money while still in the banks lobby. Australian's in management are allowed to "fail upward" and routinely bury good initiative presented by their direct reports until they can re-band them as their own - often after the originator of the idea has been managed off the platform. I've worked for five different investment banks and although each had its share of politics - they were still a meritocracy. At Macquarie the politically astute despite having zero talent aside from self-promotion rise easy through the organization.

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

MQG selection tends toward bright and motivated individuals that are team players. As such colleagues tend to be smart, work hard and genuinely nice people

    Cons

Transaction work is lumpy and time intensive and requires flexibility to be able to commit to get the job done.

    No Opinion of CEO

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Can't speak for other groups within Macquarie, but Macquarie Securities was deteriorating pretty rapidly and still continues to do so.

    Cons

No more entrepreneurship. Senior management not actually wanting to build a business and just wanting to knife people and protect their own pay cheque without actually doing anything. General lack of quality people to work with - totally different to when I joined. Ego is always a problem in finance, but ego without substance is even worse.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good pantry. Free granola bars and cereal for breakfast. If you are not ambitious or like the environment of a government type job, then this is an ok place to stay until retirement.

    Cons

All key roles are held by expat australians. Americans are treated with suspicion and generally relegated to second tier roles. Company is very bureaucratic and it is impossible to get any major deals done. We are not respected in the marketplace, and potential customers generally snicker when we mention macquarie. The management and its PR machine makes it worse by constantly repeating the statement "we are the goldman sachs of australia". Management is petty and very stingy watching nickels and dimes more closely than any other place I've been at. Moreover, very unethical management (by American standards). Top management routinely has open affairs with female subordinates, and is condoned - maybe even encouraged amongst the expat crowd.
