    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Macquarie University part-time for more than a year

    Pros

~ $50 per hour for casual tutors. Good to be able to apply to graduate roles and actually have some experience. Rewarding to see students develop over the semester and be able to improve their understanding.

    Cons

Recent changes to parking system means I cannot park in my preferred parking lot even though it is rarely at > 70% capacity. Technology aspect could be improved. Classrooms could be modernised in some areas of the university.

    Advice to Management

I believe the staff could be better encouraged to not comment on the appearance/gender/ability of their peers.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Macquarie University full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    • The structure within the university means at a department level managers can be very hands on - leading to really great mentoring (dependant on the manager of course) • Imediate workplace environment is really collegial and supportive • Campus is great! • Library and teaching facilities are constantly being improved

    Cons

    • The top down approach of the university leaves it vulnerable to changes in the govt. and research landscape. • University Executive and Vice Chancellor make decisions without full considerations of the impacts and without consulting staff • Staff benefits aren't great and progression within the organisation is limited - often stifled by a lack of professional development being offered to staff. • HR is really bad...

    Advice to Management

    • Increase transparency • Relieve pressure on staff - MQ is not a Go8 and probably shouldn't be • Focus on recruiting top tier academics • Find ways to offer good staff a level of job security

      Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Macquarie University full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

The university is working hard to be much more engaged with industry and to promote research more. The direction is really good although still has a way to go. The campus is nice with great transport, including a train station. Really good policies for diversity which are taken seriously, so great for women.

      Cons

Like all Australian universities, academic staff are often over-worked with large teaching loads. Bureaucracy can be tiresome. lots of time must be spent on quality assurance these days, which is important but really tedious.

      Advice to Management

You're on the right track, keep going! Go for quality of students rather than quantity. Provide more encouragement for academic staff to engage with the industry rather than just sit in the ivory tower.
