    Negative Outlook

I worked at Macquarie University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Beautiful campus
    Close to Macquarie shopping center

    Cons

    Bad tech stack
Bad management in the IT Development team
    Below average pay

    Advice to Management

Find someone really competent to manage the IT Development Team

I was working there during 2017, in the app development team of the university IT center. The tech stack there is very old, most work is maintaining very legacy projects, e.g. aspx website. The management of the team turned extremely bad after May 2017 because of some change. Many developers left the team because of the change. It's not good to work there for a long time which really hurts your career because you won't learn anything new in the IT development team because of the bad management.

I worked at Macquarie University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good pay, regular 9-5 hours, flexible, new office, great university landscape, very quiet office (if that’s what you like), free monthly lunches, parking bays (have to pay at staff rates), salary sacrificing.

    Cons

I was hired too early by the manager. I started training on the job with no actual real examples and was looked down upon when I didn’t deliver on little tasks that were not explained or taught to me very well. I was expected to learn tasks where work wasn’t even ready. So everything was theoretical. Spent days reading mindless notes. Manager was nice but very awkward and I felt like I wasn’t smart enough (everyone in my team had PhDs etc).

    Advice to Management

Don’t create a position when there isn’t any work to give. Makes one feel silly and awkward.

I worked at Macquarie University part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great maternity leave and union-backed pay scheme

    Cons

Almost no prospect for career progression in academia. The usual problems with large companies' bureaucracy moving slowly. The usual problems with universities in Australia becoming corporate enterprises (forced to be) aiming to make money rather than concentrating on teaching and research.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Macquarie University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Once can always assume positive intent. Great atmosphere, dedicated people. Fabulous campus. Good working conditions. Strong collaboration with other institutions

    Cons

Low level of maturity of shared and support services and overall decentralized approach to many activities; the University is on a rapid journey to improve this.

    Advice to Management

Carry on the good work that makes the University what it is - a world class institution; Capitalise more on the close proximity to the Maquarie business precinct
