I worked at Makerbot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people who you work with are absolutely amazing.
    Work/Life balance

    Cons

How the hell are you going to layoff 30 percent of the company in ONE DAY with no warning. The higher ups knew that layoffs were coming and either left the sinking ship or were content with staying, taking a pay raise, and just firing folks.

Also, the only way you got a pay raise was because people were laid off. Your pay raise is really hush money to stay, not based on actual personal merit.

    Advice to Management

Quit lying to yourselves that you actually know how to run a company. All you know how to do is destroy a really interesting idea and destroy peoples lives.

I worked at Makerbot full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Nice view
    Snacks (Sometimes)
    Some talented employees
    Good work life balance

There were lots of good employees at makerbot, but nearly all decisions were made by a select few that thought they understood more than everyone else

    Cons

    Terrible Upper Management
    Little to no promotions
    Zero recognition
    Layoffs around bonus time
    Depressing atmosphere
If you are fortunate enough to get through the hiring process in less than a few months expect low pay and no room to grow

    Advice to Management

Get a CEO that makes decisions others agree with and understands the company
If you direly need more engineers and say you are actively hiring them, don't take 12 months to do so
Know the names of more than 10% of the staff
Leading an Adware company doesn't make you a software expert

    I worked at Makerbot full-time

    Pros

Makerbot has an inspiring company history. I was thrilled by the opportunity to work on projects that were part of the game-changing heritage of the company. Among other things, these were the upsides:

    - Had acceptable benefits, but somewhat low pay.
    - Chance to work on some large-scale technology.
    - Really creative community around the company's products.
    - Cool office with stellar NYC view.

    Cons

Frequent mass layoffs, as well as a virtually directionless company infrastructure, caused confusion, frustration and constant low morale. By the time I myself was laid off (which was done with no official warning other than casual office rumors), along with a large percentage of the company's intelligent, talented staff, most of the people I worked with were already looking for other jobs due to the miserable day-to-day of working there. Negatives included:

    - Frequent layoffs, with no warning.
    - No real plan, with increasingly dismal vibes all around.
    - Technical debt on an abysmal scale.
    - Very poor people skills; teams don't even meet in person at times, and some managers might as well be robots in terms of personality.
    - Look out for "all hands" meetings; you never know when it might be to ax some sizable percentage of the employees.

    Advice to Management

Treat people like people rather than assets. Consider layoffs to be a mark of shame. Come up with a plan, and don't penalize your employees for lacking one. Stop making bad tech worse without investing the time to correct past mistakes.

    I worked at Makerbot full-time

    Pros

Free 3D printing for all employees.

    Cons

Two rounds of layoffs in 2015 alone, god knows what happened after I left. Both times, they were actively interviewing up until the day before the layoffs. Very unstable and confused leadership. Team lead is extremely petty and unprofessional and did not foster a good team environment/culture - made it awkward/downright uncomfortable to ask questions, blatantly played favorites, was unhelpful to the point where it became problematic and blocked work progress. Pay was ok but not really up to market norms.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together and choose better team leads, maybe then you wouldnt have such an abysmal turnover rate and awful culture.

Awesome job of making better salaries than everyone else at a dying company. Don't be greedy and stay too long... know when the time is right to jump ship.

I worked at Makerbot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They make 3D printers. That's kind of cool. They sometimes work. Also, your co-workers will amaze and inspire you until they day they are arbitrarily jettisoned by toilet upper management.

    Cons

The dream of a mass-market 3D printer built on a robust, well-tested, and open-source platform was sold out to SSYS and their myopic shareholders, who proceeded to flush the dream down the toilet.

    Advice to Management

Congratulations, you've successfully created a zombie company. Flush yourselves down the toilet.

Thanks for your feedback. We also believe 3D Printers are pretty cool, and we have some truly amazing and inspiring employees.
