I worked at MapR Technologies full-time

    Pros

MapR has some of the best and brightest engineering talent in the industry. On the most part, the engineers are motivated, talented and co-operative and willing to share and exchange ideas. Engineering management is also talented - many . of them come from the top tier universities with excellent track records. I also love the fully stocked break room with drinks and snacks, the ping-pong table, massage chair, and many other amenities.

    Cons

MapR has been acquired by Hewlett-Packard Enterprises in August 2019 and is now a division of HPE. Due to poor financial management by executives leading to cash flow issues, many talented staff have left the company in the last few months.

I have been working at MapR Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Been there over 4 years, seen it all... - good product and technology. - still a few nice and good engineers left to work with ...

    Cons

    - hostile work environment - there are no ethics and engineering management doesn't value good work. - bunch of jerks in top management in engineering with no leadership skills. - engineering management has no clue how to deal with engineers and retain them. - very high nepotism in engineering. - engineering top management has no vision. - attrition in engineering is very high, no wonder... - benefits below industry standards. - if you are ex-informatica you are safe!!

Our hope is that all MapR employees feel that their time at MapR is interesting, positive, and challenging. We are genuinely sorry to hear that you are not having that sort of experience. MapR is especially concerned about your “hostile work environment” comment. We want to assure you that we take all allegations of improper discrimination very seriously. If an employee is a target of severe and pervasive unwelcome conduct based on race, creed, citizenship, religion, color, ancestry, national origin, sex or gender (including gender identity), sexual orientation, age, physical or mental disability, medical conditions, family care status, veteran status, or any other basis protected by law, we want to hear about it so we can fix it. We are concerned that you have not brought forward a complaint about this alleged discrimination through the various reporting mechanisms we make available to employees. We encourage you to contact your manager, the HR department, the Legal department, or use our confidential, anonymous complaint procedures as outlined in our Speak-Up policy. We want to make sure that MapR is a comfortable and positive place to work for all of our employees. Again, we encourage you to report your concerns about any unlawful discrimination through the proper channels so they can be investigated and remediated.

I have been working at MapR Technologies full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Stepping stone to big data world. Free food and snacks. Good base compensation. Job safety, low stress.

    Cons

One word, mediocre management. Reminds me a lot of Vmware, a solid tech stack, but slowly devolving into mediocrity. Management is trying to run a startup with waterfall processes. Releases are spaced apart by several months. Tries to use as much open source as possible without giving back anything to the community. Inside joke is that you have to be from "Oracle/ Informatica cult" to be successful here. Scope for learning anything new is few and far between. Everyone operates in silos. Keep in mind that the CTO/ cofounder ran away to Uber. Completely untransparent about the state of the company. Sales execs thinks they can fool the lowly engineers with fluff like "better than golden state warriors, 80% growth" without revealing exact sales numbers. Very Oracle-ish. Bad stock options. Process is rewarded more than innovation. Again Oracle-ish. Bait and switch bonus: You will only get more than half of all your accumulated bonus only if the company goes ipo. Recruiters not very upfront about this.

    Cons

Things get a bit intensive especially during the release period but I guess it is common in the industry.
