I have been working at NSW Government full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Flex leave - Decent pay and super - Job stability - Most people are good to work with and helpful - Interesting projects - A lot of hard-working temp and contract staff

    Cons

    - Limited opportunity for development, especially when at a 3/4 grade - tend to get knocked back for requesting training and development opportunities (with the excuse of lack of funding) when several members of senior management are getting entire masters degrees paid for by the department - Unnecessary and overly complex processes - Certain managers are difficult to work with and provide little to no direction on projects and performance - No benefits apart from fitness passport (which temp staff aren't eligible for)

I have been working at NSW Government full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Exposure to large scale reform. Stick around long enough and the organisation will restructure (~ every 18 months) which opens up opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Generally senior management are poor people managers. Unfortunately bullying is rife. Kaos is welcomed because it allows poor leadership to survive. Performance management and policy are poorly executed. Senior leadership are generally reactionary - very few are given the chance to be strategic. The worst place to be is in a band 1 senior executive role - you make less than officer grade with no access to flex time and all of the responsibility.
