    Pros

If your face fits you’ll do well.

    Cons

Sexist culture. Poor management. Poor pay. They say they support work life balance but don’t evidence this.

    Advice to Management

When people leave and tell you something is wrong actually act on it

    No Opinion of CEO

I worked at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Fantastic systems, outstanding morals, strong processes, people genuinely seem to care, flexible and reliable

    Cons

As the business expands and areas become larger, the community which makes Nationwide special is being taken apart. As teams turn into 'communities', ironically there is less of a community. No one knows what anyone else is doing and this negatively effects branch engagement.

    Advice to Management

Go back to what Nationwide is about, not cheap adverts and cost cutting. The branch network is able to thrive, but only if focus is shifted from pointless metrics onto being commercial.

I have been working at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Mutual to its core, affecting everything they do at every level

    Cons

A team with only internally hired senior figures gets trapped in group think; a team with a head that was externally hired can forget mutual values at times.

    Advice to Management

Hire externally when needed, but focus on alignment to brand and culture, not how they are seen by 'the industry'.

I worked at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Lovely place to work, employee wellbeing is high on the agenda, great people around who are supportive and friendly. Interesting and challenging place to be. The CEO, Joe Garner, is a top man - don't read what the Daily Mail says about him!

    Cons

Scope for promotion is severely limited. The cost challenge internally ensures that if anyone leaves at their own accord, the first question that is asked is "can we do without this role". In many ways that is fair enough! Any company has the right to structure itself anyway it likes, but it can be frustrating if you've been eyeing a particular job up for a while. Nationwide also takes forever to get anything... done - needs to work on its agility in a big way.

    Advice to Management

Think about how you reward and support people in their careers quickly! Otherwise you may end up losing a lot of your best people.

I have been working at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Nationwide is about more than a job. It's like being part of a family, both the people that work there and the customers. They are very supportive of work life balance and wellbeing. Good career prospects in branches and in Head Office departments

    Cons

Not amazing pay at the start of your career, at around £17000, but they are willing to negotiate for the right person. Market leading benefits package though, so it's about more than the pounds in your pocket.

    Advice to Management

The salary progression needs to be considered, have steps along the way to show how salary will increase.
