I have been working at Onondaga Community College full-time

    Pros

NYS benefits; including good health care plan; good amount of paid leave each year.

    Cons

Very low pay compared to similar jobs at other central NY colleges & universities; "secretive," disenchanting, disheartening culture of fear and insecurity; opportunities for involvement in efforts that could lead to advancement or meaningful recognition seem to be repeatedly reserved for the same invited/chosen few, despite high expectation for countless other staff to contribute to and participate in other numerous...

    Advice to Management

Stop appointing and rewarding the SAME employees for every meaningful, career-building, opportunity. Look outside of your small circle of "go-to" staff. You are overlooking a LOT of talent and making a lot of employees feel devalued and disengaged.

I worked at Onondaga Community College full-time for more than 5 years

        Pros

The students are the reason you go to work everyday.

        Cons

Prior to the leadership of Dr. Casey Crabill OCC was a wonderful place to work. People were kind to one another and you were provided the support necessary to be successful in your work. Dr. Crabill has fostered and brought in leadership that create a toxic work environment. If you have an opinion that is opposite of theirs in anyway you can expect to be managed out the door. They do not have the best interest of...

            Negative Outlook

I worked at Onondaga Community College part-time for more than 3 years

            Pros

Easy to get classes to teach. Pretty easy commute if you live in the city of Syracuse.

            Cons

Bad winters. Severe lack of preparation when you're first hired. This school feels like a dumping ground for students who can't afford another school or who have had academic trouble, and it's definitely not the students' fault. I hardly got to know anyone in my department because most teachers just come to teach their classes and then they leave. There's no real sense of community. They wait until the last minute to...
