I worked at Onondaga Community College full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Many great people in the administration and faculty along with many highly effective departments who care a lot about and are focused on student success and quality of life and education at the college.

    Cons

The Executive Management and leadership prioritizes the bottom line and keeping "heads in beds" over a positive student educational and residential experience. Current students who are committed and hard working and trying to be successful and better their situations through the college are being forced to live with and be around students who are not serious about their education and could not care less about other's pursuits. The quality of life and ability to succeed on campus is hampered by students who have no GPA and no credits earned in two or three semesters because of the college's commitment to the open access policy. The President has lost focus of what the purpose of the community college was intended to be for students. She seems more focused on getting her executive council persons to obtain President positions elsewhere than making OCC a reputable and progressive institution.

I have been working at Onondaga Community College full-time

    Pros

Free, easy parking and nice-looking campus

    Cons

Salaried staff are mandated to work extra hours (weekends and weekdays) throughout the summer with NO comp-time. Top management works those extra hours as well - but they make sure they get time off.

I have been working at Onondaga Community College full-time

    Pros

NYS benefits; including good health care plan; good amount of paid leave each year.

    Cons

Very low pay compared to similar jobs at other central NY colleges & universities; "secretive," disenchanting, disheartening culture of fear and insecurity; opportunities for involvement in efforts that could lead to advancement or meaningful recognition seem to be repeatedly reserved for the same invited/chosen few, despite high expectation for countless other staff to contribute to and participate in other numerous campus-wide efforts needed throughout the year to adequately serve students and families during important campus or "campus community" events, such as move-in day, "party on the quad," open house, etc; ...events for which staff will engage fully in, but that go largely unseen.
