I have been working at Optus part-time for more than a year

    Pros

The team that you work with are really good, you build strong relationships with each other because of the craziness you go through. The store managers are also really supportive and will help you with sales strategies and training. You get $80 credit off your bill and 25% discount off each service that you have with optus.

    Cons

Some of the customers have the worst attitudes but you have to suck it up if they're not blowing it out of proportion. You only ask for a manager to take over if you can't handle it. External senior management, so area manager and state etc. they put a lot of pressure on the store to do well but they just push pressure, there's no incentive to do well. The commission is laughable. Eventually there's just so much... pressure that you kind of hate going to work. The opportunity to move up is really restricted because of the area manager's 'criteria'.

    Advice to Management

Support your staff, provide incentives via pay, not through gifts and objects.

I worked at Optus full-time for more than a year

    Pros

You have the opportunity to work with fun people, if you are lucky enough to have a reliable team. You will likely find yourself filling in shifts for your lazy colleagues.

    Cons

    - Lots of young people at uni who party and don’t show up for shifts or dont take their role seriously - Not many opportunities for career progression - Management is unprofessional and there is a terrible ‘high school’ social structure - Staff are pressured to make high volume of sales at the expense of customer, whether products are suitable or not - Previously has great commission structure, however... recently new management came in and changed structure to make it harder to earn commission - Required to attend meetings which are “unpaid” you are given time in lieu - No over time, just time in lieu - Many stores do not have management and staff are left to struggle unsupported - High staff turnaround - Terrible pay and expected to work most weekends - Products are services aren’t very good and it is common to have aggressive customers come in to complain - You spend a lot of time helping old people with broken phones and you are expected to rush them through to door or make a sale out of them

    Advice to Management

Horrendous management, you need to work on having a store manager and an assistant manager for every store. Most stores do not even have proper management. You need to work on the aggressive sales culture, it is wrong to take advantage of people who cannot afford products and services in order to meet targets. Do not reward sales people who take advantage of customers.

I have been working at Optus part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Used to great with close knit team members, happy manager, relaxed and casual work environment.

    Cons

High turnover in middle management has resulted in high turnover in retail store staff. Combined with the increasing sales targets and new competitive styles brought in by new management many of the old staff have left believing the company was no longer like it used to be and did not respect the individual butonly cared about profit.

    Advice to Management

Lower the unrealistic targets, they cause your employees on the ground unnecessary amounts of stress and anxiety, especially since “performance talks” have to be had every time sometime hits below 100%... which is hardly easy to do.
