I worked at Oxford University Press full-time

    Pros

Flexible working. Was a great team to work with. The publishing team were great. Support staff fantastic.

    Cons

Management are not interested in keeping their talented staff. After a number of years working in Sales, year after year the same issues would reappear and be brought to upper managements attention - and are not fixed to this day. A lot of lip service but no changes in simple processes - to the detriment of the company and the absolute frustration of the sales team.

    Advice to Management

Oxford has a great name and the publishing is solid - clean up the rest of those processes and you might find yourself in an amazing position in the market. It is a mystery as to why you haven't ?!

    Pros

Half Friday's every fortnight On site parking Flexi hours Ability to not work hard everyday - if you are looking for a place you can procastinate and kill time this is the place for you. Brand name recognition Office location is great

    Cons

Management are all long time employees that have been promoted up due to longevity of their employment rather than qualifications or talent. If you are passionate and hard working this is not the company for you. 80% of staff come in late and leave early - a nightmare if you are managing a team! Lots of 'working from home' or out of office staff that aren't managed properly. Only occasionally has someone employed...

    Advice to Management

Increase salaries and make job titles and tasks match industry standard. Culture of internal promotions based on longevity rather than talent is a disgrace. Look at middle management!!

    Former Employee - Editorial Assistant

I worked at Oxford University Press full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

My coworkers were amazing, intelligent, and talented people who made every day better. OUP is great at hiring excellent employees; they are not so great at keeping them.

    Cons

-Creative thinking is discouraged; company obsessed with maintaining the status quo. -Outdated processes. -Poor treatment of entry level employees, leading to a high turnover rate. -Extremely low pay for an extremely heavy workload. -Senior management is awful and clueless, and bad at communication. -Favouritism runs rampant.

    Advice to Management

Treat your lower-level employees better. Stop coasting on the company name.

I worked at Oxford University Press full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I left for a job at another publishing house, but I have and do recommend OUP to others, often. Why? *As an employee, you spend your day surrounded by people who *genuinely* care about knowledge and scholarship. *In editorial, you also spend time helping scholars get their work out into the world--research they have been building for years and years. It's powerful. *The entry-level groups are young and ambitious...

    Cons

*There are roles at the company that *constantly* turn over due to the same management issues. This adds stress to every other department. *Salaries are on the low end, especially compared to trade houses and (funded) not-for-profit university presses. This makes it hard to save money and pay bills, especially for young people. I worked two jobs my first year, which is not uncommon. *The publishing industry is changing...

    Advice to Management

OUP is a great place to work, especially given the massive constraints any publishing/media company is currently under. HOWEVER: Recruitment needs to emphasize that this is a not-for-profit and thus salaries are on the low end for publishing, especially compared to trade houses, so people can better calibrate expectations. HR needs to be more responsive to pervasive, repeated issues, as well as actually removing...
