I worked at Pacific Dental Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    The paycheck was on time

    Cons

High turnover due to inept, stubborn leadership. Starts at the very top. Reactionary without any forward thinking.

    Advice to Management

Push back when dealing with the executives. Just because his name is on the check doesn't make him smart or correct. Take time and develop your employees. Try a little honesty and transparency.

    Pros

PDS participates in many charitable contributions

    Cons

It honestly comes down to upper Management. May Regional Managers are hired from outside companies and have no knowledge of dentistry. Couple this with being an Operations Manager with no dental background and it's a mess. They hire those without dental experience which is a plus, but expect them to run million dollar practices with little training. If the RM is not supportive good luck. The hours expected to work are ridiculous and not conducive to a healthy family life. There is so much turnover in management and associate dentists and false promises from the beginning. Many times Operations Managers with little experience are put into an office and forced to "sink or swim". While they also offer training it is almost impossible to attend because there is no one to fill in for you in office.

    Advice to Management

Be more hands on. If an office has a lack of staffing then be proactive to provide relief. The short staff creates a higher volume of work for OM's and makes for terrible morale.

I worked at Pacific Dental Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

good pay, good people, well known company

    Cons

Very few holidays in a year. PTO is very little compared to extra hours I put in. Do not expect a good dental plan even it is a dental company.

    Advice to Management

Management is very poor. They do not promote people in the company. They find small mistakes to postpone your promotions.

    Pros

Some companies make money in spite of themselves and this is one of them. They own the space they are in and have very little competition. Its a great business model they have created. Vacation and paid time off finally got a little better this year and is now on par with other companies in the area. But its still just average. Lots of fun people to work with and they do have some fun events. Also lots of volunteer opportunities that you can get paid for. Also some departments get flexible schedules and other don't. Some folks are very much working for the patient and trying their best.

    Cons

Like many have said here there is a ton of favoritism and cronyism. Most of the upper management have been in this one company for most of their career and it shows. Put it this way, if there was tough competition in the market space, they would struggle on understanding how to compete. There is really 2 PDS cultures, 1 in the dental offices, second is the corporate office. Dental office workers generally are looking to do the right thing. At the corporate office, favoritism and nepotism are rampant and your work life is dependent on your manager. Upper management changes direction a lot, is still lost on how to properly manage IT (its better with the new cio) and generally has no 'specific' vision other than to be the greatest dental services company in america. Also the company training programs are very much focused for people right out of college or on their first job. If you are experienced don't expect much job growth unless you have a manager that is really good. There are a few.

    Advice to Management

Not much. Management is fat and happy and the business is doing financially very well. Good things don't last forever but they are on a good ride so they see no reason to change anything.

    Pros

PDS is a great place to work! Everyone is very friendly and genuinely wants to see you succeed. The company is extremely ambitious and expects the same out of their employees, which fosters a great work ethic. There are a lot of opportunities to learn and they give you a clear path to see where you can grow within the company. If you want to be around hard-working, fun, and all-around great people, this is the place for you!
