I have been working at River Island Clothing full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great atmosphere in stores, friendly people, amazing discount on fabulous products

    Cons

Sometimes felt there was a lack of support, senior managers often difficult to talk to. Low salary for the amount of work and hours put in. A lot of pressure.

I worked at River Island Clothing full-time

    Pros

Great discount. Worked with some of the most astute retailers I’ve met. Very operationally savvy.

    Cons

Running on a business model that is no longer sustainable on the payroll budget in stores. Obsession with product handling and merchandising prevents anyone from making any real impact. Every visitor to your store has a different, subjective opinion on how it should look and subsequently you spend all your time doing major floor moves to appease this. The focus is always on money and driving sales - this comes before everything, especially people. Tenure is often a curse - the people who’ve been there for years tend not to have people skills and they form a clique. Senior management are generally rude and demanding.

I worked at River Island Clothing full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    50% discount Training was good

    Cons

Didn't feel like manger I worked was actually supported felt rushed to make decisions she didn't work as a team she was very forceful so did not like working with her. some mangers came across extremely judgmental and very unsupportive when I needed help with cover some mangers told there team members they don't want them to go so purposely didn't send them leaving my store venerable but this was a requirement so had to escalate this issue some managers they think they know better because they've been in the company for years but this is a dangerous mentality. then you have some who I've met and are really lovely warm people it just depends on the management team you work with for me it could have been better.

I have been working at River Island Clothing full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Discount The Store Teams Ability to run Store almost like its your own business The constant changes to processes and procedures to keep things fresh The structure of the company and there's always someone to answer your questions Stocktake Bonus Pension Scheme Long Service Leave of an extra weeks holidays for 10, 15, 20 years etc Extra week of Annual Leave for Store Manager

    Cons

The pay for newer managers and staff in general is very poor and the reason for a very high turnover and disillusioned employees Non-paid maternity leave Non-paid sick leave Minimal benefits exc. Pension and Discount Country stores are often forgotten about and progression is virtually impossible Recognition is not pay related and reviews are discontinued High Expectations for staff with no real recognition - Boss's Bounty is not sufficient for numerous staff in one month

I have been working at River Island Clothing full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great Employee discount (50%) Uniform Allowance Lovely team members - feel like family Love the brand and the clothing.

    Cons

No benefits or incentives for managers. No bonuses. Expected to work overtime with no pay for this. You have to work overtime due to how few staff there are in store. Head office receive bonuses and incentives but store do not. No staff hours... almost impossible to get tasks done. Pay is very low compared to other retail brands. Pay is not even across stores and areas. Store manager in a small store could be on more than someone in a flagship etc. Pay is never reviewed, hard working managers and staff have no incentive. No recognition or even thank you's from Area/Regional Managers Area/Regional Managers are rude and unprofessional. Company make it really hard to progress. Staff throughout, on all tiers, do not feel valued so staff moral is low. Inconsistency in expectations across areas and stores.
