    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at ScanlineVFX full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good pay. Nice central location (Vancouver office).

    Cons

    - Negligent management, why? 1. Leaving numerous employee contracts to the last week or even day of employment without any prior notice of extension is disgusting. Playing with peoples livelihoods should be taken much more seriously. 2. When people come to management with concerns over artist morale, usually due to the aforementioned, it should be again taken seriously and not thrown into the garbage bin of... complaints. 3. Stop pigeonholing your artists into staying by deliberately continuing to use niche software that's harder to use and on par if not more expensive than the competition when taking training time into account. - Stephan (CEO) should pick a job and stick to it. If he wants to be CEO then he needs to learn to be more considerate of others and breed a more compassionate working environment to match, there's a reason why the top echelons are full of highly paid sharks because they go unchecked. If he wants to be a VFX Supervisor then go for it, and only it. You're a good supervisor, a little harsh directly and a little militant but you have a great eye for what you want and how to get there and I always appreciated that even when it meant a complete redo. If he wants to push Flowline and maybe fix this issue of pigeonholing a little then step aside from ScanlineVFX and push the software to other studios but properly this time to avoid another MPC fiasco; the software is already an IP of Flowline GmbH and not Scanline.

    Advice to Management

    1. Fire the highly paid sharks and useless management, supes, producers that get away with murder by burning people out, treating them like scum and caring about number one and only number one. 2. Hire some competent leaders and talents from other studios. 3. Fix the software situation, move to proven industry standard software to unlock a wealth of talent in the industry. Stephan, you can keep flowline going, at... it's core it's an amazing tool that the industry is still in awe of but port it or it'll die. 4. Work out an actual roadmap of shows, hire accordingly and for goodness sake if you must downsize which every studio has to do then give people a heads up!

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at ScanlineVFX full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Work on really cool projects -Decent atmosphere -Knowledgeable staff -Appropriate overtime compensation -Good location (new studio is at Granville/ Dunsmire, right downtown Vancouver near skytrains) -Fun parties every few months

    Cons

-Staff receive little to no feedback or performance reviews -Very long hours during crunch time -Frequent schedule updates make prioritizing tasks difficult -Leads are often stretched too thin to make it easy for artists to get feedback -Often unclear description of what is needed for particular shots

    Advice to Management

-Provide more frequent feedback to staff after projects. It is important to understand areas where improvement is necessary.

    Pros

-Meet some truly talented individuals -Coworkers can become some of your best friends -The bake days! -Awesome projects -The parties

    Cons

-Stress -Lack of trust within departments -Fails to acknowledge the 'H' in 'HR' -Production staff appears incompetent on the best of days -Stress -Company owner doesn't appear to have a grasp of reality outside of the office -Plenty of last minute decisions that make no good business sense -Rushing certain departments to get things done without providing adequate resources or reasonable timelines -Stress

    Advice to Management

Trust your senior staff and don't take their loyalty for granted. You didn't get this far without them.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at ScanlineVFX full-time for less than a year

    Pros

They pay you, and you need to eat... Oh and they're really nice during the recruitment process (so you don't believe what you read on here before signing...) Also, when you leave on your last day, you will feel like the end Shawshank redemption, that part is cool..

    Cons

    - Constant pressure (micromanagement, psychological blackmail, etc.) - Crazy hours - Incompetent producers - Slow pipeline - No consideration towards employees at all. DO NOT relocate for Scanline. When I was working for them they just fired people after they changed country for them, simply because they couldn't manage to land new projects. - Shows are managed by a few workaholics who get absolutely mad if... they can't find people at their desk after hours, and cannot conceive that people have life outside the office and therefore think everybody should be as miserable as them

I worked at ScanlineVFX full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pay can be decent, but I'd only recommend if you can get ten dollars more an hour than any other place, and even then, have a back up ready. You'll be expected to do the work of several people, and you WILL get burnt out really quickly, with no time for a life outside of work. If for some reason, you're a person who wants to do fluid sims in 3DS Max (A kind of person I've never met in my life before), then this... is your place.

    Cons

Horrible, outdated Windows & 3DS Max pipeline that's more fit for gaming, than VFX, with pipe TDs who break more stuff than they fix. Everybody is perpetually pissed off at everyone else, deadlines are just made up arbitrarily and not even remotely realistic. Constant back stabbing, and promotions are based on brown nosing and who is friends with who, rather than talent or ability to get work done. Yelling is... pretty common place. Projects are constantly late and behind schedule due to poor management and really bad tools, which the artists always end up being punished for. If it's not fluid FX, nobody really cares, unless the client gives notes on it, at which point it's usually too late to make very significant changes.

    Advice to Management

Set realistic schedules, and hire enough people . Stop getting rid of all of your senior people. Actually talk to the employees instead of hiding in your office. Show an interest in things other than Flowline.

    I worked at ScanlineVFX full-time

    Pros

If you're desperate and can't find work anywhere else, Scanline may be a short-term option.

    Cons

Horrible work environment - people crammed into a dark basement with no filtered air. People were getting sick regularly because the air was so dank. People were also terrified of being fired. Many employees are there on work visas and had given up their homes in their country of origin. Facing unemployment in a new country is considerably more difficult than it would be at home. Any efforts to improve efficiency... or working conditions is taken as a criticism punishable by firing. Management is rude and mean-spirited. From what I saw, the idea of teamwork is non-existent. Pay is so low that it's very difficult to find a decent place to live. Vancouver is very expensive. They do not offer parking for employees and parking in Vancouver is not easy (think downtown LA). In my time at Scanline, I didn't meet one single person who was glad to be there.

    Advice to Management

If you're going to hire top-notch talent, let them make your company better. Treat your talent well and they will reward you. Also, keep your domestic squabbles at home.
