I worked at Sir Robert McAlpine full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Leadership, living company values, culture, amazing range of projects, great people throughout the business

    Cons

Lots of change underway, still need to focus on the one company ethos which can be affected by the regional model (although I believe this is improving)

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what your doing, invest in technology that will enable the back office support functions to work more efficiently in a measurable way. Trust your HR/People function, they're on the right track driving lots of positive change.

I worked at Sir Robert McAlpine full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the staff on site are friendly

    Cons

Site conditions are lousy, anything to save pennies on prelims. Work processes and practices is like going back twenty years. No support from Senior management, good at covering their own backs. takes an age to order anything (6 weeks to get some paint). Constantly changing programme and strategy to deliver a project. Should stick to the niche projects and stay away from multi residential high rise projects and not employ children to manage a project.

    Advice to Management

No loyalty shown to employees and don't follow their own procedures and processes, only when it suits them. Directors are being kept in the dark about what really goes on on site.

I worked at Sir Robert McAlpine full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great career potential. 150yr history. Family run business with impecable reputation in the construction industry. Uk based company so not too big that you get lost as an employee.

    Cons

The business is definitely behind the times. They are not up to speed with the latest technology and processes in the industry.

    Advice to Management

To fit in with this company you definitely need to be aware of its heritage and past ways of doing things. Not good to be a maverick.

    Pros

No micro management, flexible working allowing maximum employee satisfaction.

    Cons

    Lack of Personal Development Opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Be person focused not project focused. Empowering employees to work will result in better project outcomes.

I have been working at Sir Robert McAlpine full-time

    Pros

A wealth of experienced colleagues who will often go well out of their way to help solve problems.

    Cons

Poor direction, slow to react to changes in market and emerging trends. Being totally left behind by competitors on new technology and working practices.
Stuffy, old fashioned atmosphere. Real problems emerging in staff turnover, failing to recruit women and young people. Increasing losses due to poor contract awareness, legal awareness and being market savvy.

I have been working at Sir Robert McAlpine full-time

    Pros

Used to be a excellent company to work for, recently the micromanaging and job creation for a selected few is frightening. Mcalpines have lost their way and have forgot that it's the site teams who drive the company.

    Cons

Shift in management is a serious concern, regions are merging, staff being made redundant, offices closing...... Worrying times.

The family values are very much one sided.

    Advice to Management

Strip everything back to how the company was managed 7-10 years ago.
