I worked at State of Nevada full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great pay scale (as long as 5-year long furloughs don't come back), good benefits, nice co-workers.

    Cons

At the Belrose office we were once told not to talk outside of breaks, and you're here to be seen, not heard , during furloughs, we couldn't take our time off when needed, "I tell you when you can take off." Yikes!

I have been working at State of Nevada full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

No nights or weekends, paid holidays and sick and vacation time.

    Cons

Most workers promote based on who they know rather than what they know. A lot of upper management have an old school way of thinking.

I have been working at State of Nevada full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Stable for employees that are not funded through federal grants. If you're funded through federal grants, 100% of the commonly held belief that there is job security with the state is FALSE.

    Cons

The compensation is a joke. The equivalent rank with any other local government entity (counties, cities etc.) pays around 40% more. That gap is NEVER going to close, despite the recent legislation permitting collective bargaining, because there are no teeth to it to bring to the legislature. Compensating state employees properly will never be a politically popular decision, and that means it will NEVER happen.

I worked at State of Nevada full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The Department of Public Safety boasts some of the best equipment in the country. The staff that are there are deeply committed to the values the organization talks about. There is a large degree of mobility to move positions both laterally and vertically.

    Cons

PERS is a brutally high deduction (around 23%). Other benefits are paltry compared to the private sector or even other law enforcement agencies.
