    I worked at Suncor full-time

    Pros

Good if you're looking for stability, traditional 9-5 gig.

    Cons

Not great if you're looking for growth. Your leader is likely someone who has been with the organization for many years and isn't looking to go anywhere or rock the boat...which means they're not open to new ideas.

I have been working at Suncor full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Good pay and time off. Some parts of the company are demonstrating a true effort and commitment to improve employee engagement.

    Cons

Based on my personal experiences: - Too many re-organizations and leadership changes; I've had 12+ leaders in five years (and I know of others with similar experiences). I spend a large part of my time training new leaders, and taking backward steps when they decide to change direction, instead of moving forward much needed work. - Many mid-level leaders are highly involved in the "how" of the work instead of acting...

    Advice to Management

Make an effort to look out for the long-time, committed, employees who have had way too many leadership changes; maybe give them a real mechanism to voice their concerns - the direct leaders aren't listening. Allow employees to nominate themselves for promotion and/or openly post all front- and mid-level leader positions. Link leader compensation to how well they lead and develop their team; include feedback from their...

I have been working at Suncor full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Lot's of great people and opportunity to move to different areas of the company if you are a self starter and motivated to make connections yourself.

    Cons

It can be very difficult to move up to a leadership position and leadership gets little to no training on how to be effective. The rating system depends solely on how much your leaders like you and whether they are willing to take the time to understand what you do.

    Advice to Management

Be more forthcoming with employees on their succession plans. Improve the employee rating system.

I have been working at Suncor full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Largest energy company in Canada, laid back front line workers, mostly good people you work with. Gain great experience in oilsands. Potential for great career oppurtunitites.

    Cons

Management always asks for more with less, unrealistic expectations. Department is too leaned out, employees are overworked as a result. Employees not fairly performance reviewed/lots of politics involved in determining raises/promotions. Company has an unofficial policy of not moving employees within Suncor out of Fort McMurray before 8 years of service in oil sands, can feel stuck in position/department and management...

    Advice to Management

Treat fort mcmurray differently as it needs to be, the city will never be like Calgary or Toronto no matter how much you try to make it feel. Improve work life balance for employees living in this region and let go of the leash you have on them in fort mcmurray, there is a lot of skills/expertise in your people that would still be beneficial to the company in other locations.
