    Pros

I've never worked with a finer set of people in my life.

    Cons

The solar industry is struggling as a whole. Riding the constant and continuously massive waves of change is unsustainable long term.

    Advice to Management

You're already doing everything you can. Keep caring.

    Pros

Smart and ethical staff, location, Solar: "tech for good." Good exec communications with the team, monthly "town hall."

    Pros

Great company culture, lots of runway to expand the scope of your job title, good company mission

    Cons

Higher level decisions seemed haphazard at times, hyper paced sales environment

    Advice to Management

Don't lose the forest for the trees. Keeping qualified talent should be a top priority in such a niche market.

    Pros

The company was attempting to create a strong, national brand in the residential, roof top, solar PV market.

    Cons

They didn't actually know how to do what they were attempting to do. Like most recently

    Advice to Management

Management needed (and still needs) to learn operations management from the ground up. Which means: they need to spend some time performing remedial functions to better understand the business and then grow it slowly. They also need to take remedial courses in financial controls. They burned through an unconscionable amount of money by spending it on wasteful processes because they had no knowledge of actual business management. Why? Because they had never worked in simple operational roles. Anywhere. They had a good idea but were woefully inexperienced. They also believed they knew what they were doing and were creating "value" by creating "proprietary intellectual property" for which they paid foolish amounts of money to develop. This intellectual property was trivial - and it wasn't even proprietary. It was a set of poorly developed "tools" that already existed in better form elsewhere. Senior management paid vast sums to "develop" content that was a ramshackle collection of Commercial off the shelf (COTS) software or freely available tools that were poorly cobbled together by junior software "developers" with no real experience or talent. The company did recruit some capable and experience sales talent in some regions but they never actually supported success. Good ideas are a dime a dozen. Careful execution is what matters. I have been paid thousands of dollars to explain to people what senior management at Sungevity never learned: "You can definitely have this! And you can get it cheap, fast and good! Pick two.

Sungevity tried to do all three and got none. No surprise there. The only surprise is that they didn't go bankrupt sooner. Having friends in the VC world helped, but ultimately we all have to pay the piper - especially if all you're selling is a pipe dream.
