I worked at Telstra part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Largest Telco in Australia, company looks great on your CV and some of the managers were capable of being excellent but were clearly forced to follow what they are told by their own 1 ups

    Cons

I really was keen and excited to finally get the chance to learn and work at one of the big stores. We started as 12 new employees who were all excited to work here, unfortunately we were not trained properly as we did not get enough practice to use the counter-intuitive and messy crm, managing complaints and following correct process. Instead we sat in a room (we could literally walk into work whenever we wanted and still get paid normally) and we were told to do the online training which asks if you have completed tasks which show older versions of their crm. I actually tried initially following each course that I was told to do and confirmed that I have completed it one by one. My other fellow colleagues never did anything and ticked the boxes that they have completed everything, so on my 3rd day on the job I got told off like a kid at school that I’m “very behind” even though I was The only person doing the right thing!! I wasn’t happy about this so I explained that this cannot be true as I worked all day and the next day I was told off for having an attitude. I should have realised that I needed to leave this place or complain to HR about the terrible treatment. Long story short; in less than 6 months I have seen 15-20 employees leave 9 of which were from my group of 12 new employees and myself included as I have left after 10 months of pressure to just leave and get told that I can’t perform well and when I ask for support, management don’t care, they just have to ask “if you need support just ask for help” yet they themselves don’t know a lot of the process and act like they know how to use the crm software yet most of them don’t know how to do most tasks on it!! I left this place thanks to the store manager telling me that I will be a backup worker as they have no shifts for me in the upcoming month during Christmas (essentially telling me to just give up, I finally did). This was a disappointing experience and I have watched a very dysfunctional group of managers who were clearly not capable of being leaders while most staff hated them, in fact most staff didn’t even respect the company that they worked for as they realised how old fashioned this company functioned ( at least at a retail sales level). Furthermore, after leaving this job I had realised that I could not focus or take advantage of my potential at that store thanks to management truly belittling me and convincing me that I am dumb and incapable of this job inaddition to micromanaging me.

I worked at Telstra part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Great staff perks - Fun store teams - Good culture and team meetings in stores - Strong product offerings - Commission on NPS and sales targets

    Cons

    - Sales, sales, sales = can easily turn into KPIs for managers/sales consultants in store as opposed to the customer experience - It's retail, so what you see is what you get - If you're a uni student, managers don't care about your classes and exams, they just want availability
