      Great talent but bad culture

      Pros

Work with a lot of talented people Work life balance and flexibility WFH available

      Cons

Culture is very bad. Especially due to company restructures every couple of months. This causes fear and protective behaviour. This means that talent is not nessesarily preserved. A lot of politics. If you are the go with the flow kind of person it might be ok. If you have something valid to say you will need to think clearly before you express yourself as it may be used against you.

      Pros

Opportunity to change roles across time, to build your career. Good people. Always challenged and interesting scope.

      Cons

Limited learning & development budget, job uncertainty due to frequent restructures. People can get pretty stressed in areas that are under-resourced, or when compensating for under-performing offshore teams.

      Pros

Very good work-life balance. As long as you do your part, you can pretty much work anywhere. Salary are higher than the average (much higher). Some very good people that really care about customers and making things differently. Innovation: As the company is creating a new platform to escape from the legacy trap, I had the opportunity to learn more about AWS services. Many training's paid by the company.

      Cons

Very Slow paced: what in other companies took the team to do in 1 week, at Telstra it could easily take 2 months (no joking). Company is re-inventing itself to improve that but it will take time (years). Work is not very meaningful: As the company is creating a new platform to escape from the legacy trap, I find myself doing things that other companies have done years ago. Constant restructures and redundancies make it hard to get your job done. Most people's focus is on waiting for the next round of redundancies. Many people only care about the share price (as after working 20 years there they have a good pile) but don't do much to grow it. Middle management creates the politic. So much internal fights that made it very frustrating at the end... Some people prefer to not advance if that means losing power.

      Pros

In the specific area I worked in there was exposure to different technologies. There was a lot of project work available. Good general manager, supportive & tech savvy.

      Cons

When I left - October 2019, the restructure was in full swing, there was no attempt to keep talent, it was chaos. As people were moved into the pools (tribes etc.) the link with their previous management was cut, skilled people were let go and dead wood stayed. Telstra was very siloed, with areas having their own priorities, so cross department delivery was difficult.

      Finding its way

      3 Dec 2019 - Principal Product Owner
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Flexible and supportive of healthy work life balance Depth of talent, experience and resourcing Shift to Agile ways of working almost complete

      Cons

Rolling rounds of restructures and redundancies has led to shifting priorities, projects that stop and start or are handed over mid-stream, and a lack a consistent focus for individuals and teams Changes have given way to acceptance of wide gaps in salary, experience and individual contribution across the same band of roles, at all levels
