Pros

I can't think of one pro

Cons

My time at Tendable has been, well, quite the letdown. I'm not thrilled to be writing this review, but I feel it's important to share my experience for anyone considering a job with this company. First off, Tendable's staff situation is a real downer. They don't seem to value the hard work we put in. Forget about moving up the ladder if you're not already a manager. It's like a career traffic jam, and it's demoralising. When it comes to being upfront, Tendable isn't exactly a poster child. They've got this habit of keeping financial problems under wraps until they're basically forced to spill the beans company-wide. That kind of secrecy doesn't exactly foster trust, and it leaves us guessing about the company's future. To make matters worse, Tendable flat-out lied to the engineering team about the redundancies in another department. They said one thing and did another, which left a bad taste in our mouths and shattered trust within the company. Now, let's talk performance reviews. Tendable's approach is seriously flawed. Instead of offering helpful feedback and support, they tend to slap you with a bad annual review just to check a box. It's demotivating and unfair, especially if you're busting your butt. Tendable isn't great at holding on to good people either. They don't make an effort to keep valued employees around, and many of us end up looking for greener pastures. The revolving door of talent is a direct result of the company's lacklustre efforts in this department. But here's the kicker: Tendable thinks negative reinforcement is a motivational secret sauce. Nope, criticism and punishment don't make us work harder. They just make us resent our jobs. To sum it up, I can't, in good conscience, recommend Tendable as a workplace. They don't appreciate their staff, they're secretive about their finances, they have a messed-up performance review system, they don't care about keeping good employees, and they believe in using negativity to get results. It's not exactly a recipe for a happy work life. I hope Tendable rethinks its approach and makes some positive changes down the road. Ps don't believe the positive reviews. We were all asked to leave one

Pros

Small company (engineering’s getting smaller every day with the amount of people leaving) so lots of opportunity to stand out for contributions. Promotions given more frequently than in other companies, usually when others in the team leave, to try and increase staff retention. Salaries updated pretty well, usually when people inform management that they’re not paying market value and other companies are willing to pay more. You get to work on a product that appears to help the people working on the NHS frontline to provide a better service and understand where their gaps in that service’s efficiency are.

Cons

Engineers used to be close to the CEO, he used to maintain good communications with the engineering team, lots of direct teams calls etc, that’s all gone now over the last year. Leadership team haven’t been open with the finances of the company for the last year, which was a shock when they felt they had to reveal them to explain no bonuses this year. Business model is horribly troubled due to the very long cycles, and small rewards, from their primary sales source, the NHS. Some deals take over 2 years to close. Product haven’t really provided a clear, well-planned vision for the company, resulting in confusing changes of direction for the long term plans. There’s also been a LOT of conflict over the last year between Product and Engineering, causing a lot of engineers to walk. Morale is occasionally through the floor due to both senior eng management changes in the beginning of this year and the amount of engineers leaving, even the eng managers all left. A few under-planned and not-thought-through projects of varying sizes have dented faith considerably in the C-team.

Pros

The team I managed was full of smart engineers who were all willing to learn and use their knowledge and skills not only to build a great product, but also to make sure the codebase was maintainable. I worked with some really talented and dedicated people across the whole org.

Cons

Unfortunately despite requesting reasonable adjustments for my autism, like clear expectations, these were not put in place. The expectations were very often communicated as negative (not constructive) feedback, and it felt as if part of my job was to guess what my boss expected of me. Despite the organisation claiming they were agile the engineers were still expected to analyse and fully design almost every single piece of work upfront. Engineers were being given unclear directions, but this was excused by claiming they should be able to deal with ambiguity, however the ambiguity was manufactured rather than representative of the actual business and/or engineering complexity.
