I worked at URS Corporation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some great and interesting team members Work is consistently provided as opposed to having to chase it in smaller consultancies.

    Cons

Wage is slightly below industry average - found that works as a trade-off for a comfortable environment and good team. Advise to chase your interests or career goals if you start to get stagnant.

    Advice to Management

    Focus on integrity.

    I worked at URS Corporation

    Pros

Good training opportunities, lots of mentoring, the work load is easily manageable. Get to travel around because of work in remote areas.

    Cons

Can end up on long projects. The travelling can also get annoying sometimes because you have to be away weeks at time.

    Advice to Management

Give the people who deserve a pay rise a pay rise.

I worked at URS Corporation full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

very people focused. If you find yourself in a good team, chances are there is very low staff turnover. I had the opportunity to transfer to offices in Australia, Europe and Scandinavia

    Cons

Lumbering bureaucratic administrative processes to satisfy US Defence client requirements can slow the flow of many projects. Though a good PM will take this in their stride. PMs are more highly valued over technical staff. This is a con only if you prefer technical side!

    Advice to Management

i worked here for 12 years across 3 countries. I enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot from my colleagues. Minor advice is I would have liked to see more structure and external influence in staff training.

    I worked at URS Corporation

    Pros

Good technical people to work with. Pay rates average. Promotions and Perks similar to others in industry. Reasonable social activities for employees.

    Cons

Got too large too quick. Very top heavy and bureaucratic. US-centric so local career development restricted. Not much accountability. Management ok.

I have been working at URS Corporation full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I've had the opportunity to travel internationally and work on some great projects thanks to URS. Culture varies significantly office to office which isnt a bad thing/good thing. Company is pretty relaxed about taking time off, including leave without pay. Really strong QA systems and you'll gain great engineering design skills as there are many skilled and recognised specialists. Will be interesting to see merger results...

    Cons

You'll never make great pay. Pay will be average to below average. Recently I've also seen colleagues lose jobs in tough economic times/markets which is disappointing as one would expect a reasonable buffer in financial doldrums. Seems most $ goes to shareholders and the very senior management. Not much support to staff when seconded to other firms.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to consider offering strong performing employees special perks including bonuses/shares. Larger retainers need to be established for carrying good staff during doldrums; understood sometimes staff let go, but this should be performance based as much as possible. Would prefer realistic, organic growth targets (or realistic short spurts based on emerging markets)

    I worked at URS Corporation

    Pros

Flexible in allowing work from home. In the good times, they attracted great people.

    Cons

Massive overheads spent on ineffective quality management system, yet little is spent on business development.

    Advice to Management

Focus on your current clients and expanding your client base.

I have been working at URS Corporation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company has a good reputation for technical excellence and the training provided is very worthwhile. There are some incredibly technically competent staff who are given great opportunities to apply themselves, needless to say the technical abilities of URS are the standout highlight. The company has comprehensive internal systems for pretty much everything, an extremely solid and well regarded safety culture, in-depth...

    Cons

The company is not market facing, it is facing itself and wondering why it has no work. The company is hamstrung by complex and pointless management systems, a pathological obsession with avoiding risk (to the point of making it so difficult to work with URS that clients go elsewhere out of sheer frustration), the company is slow to respond to the market, has an extremely poor attitude to business development, has managers...

    Advice to Management

Get out of your offices and meet clients, wake up and realise technical staff bring in the money and making them redundant reduces the ability to generate revenue, get your heads out of the systems and focus on outcomes, recognise staff for winning work, take responsibility for organisational failures, take ownership of the problems and be accountable for fixing them

I worked at URS Corporation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Reported to look after staff well in the good times. Good at delivering large EPCM jobs for large clients.

    Cons

Poor regional and local management. Little penetration of market beyong large clients with large jobs. Colossal corporate overheads makes it difficult to win work. Unable to build relationships with some local clients with money to spend.

    Advice to Management

Reduce overheads by trimming Quality Assurance, health and safety, human resources and in particular unmanaged recruiters who add little or no value and mess up peoples lives by recruiting people when there is no work for them

    Pros

Great culture with staff, social activities encouraged and subsidised by management, opportunities to work with some very knowledgeable people at the top of their field

    Cons

Salaries at the low end of the scale

    Advice to Management
