I have been working at Uline full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This is the best place I've ever worked. Serious family vibe here and they listen to their employees. Great compensation

    Cons

Very rigid way of doing things but it has worked for over 20 years with huge success. Very difficult to get hired here so good luck.

    Advice to Management

    Keep hiring quality people.

I have been working at Uline full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Profit sharing bonus, always know how much you will make since no commission. Great first sales position for anyone interested.

    Cons

No commission leads some people to not work as hard. Additionally, some secrecy from management when it comes to policy and personnel changes.

    Advice to Management

Share more about company changes and jobs that are available throughout the company.

I have been working at Uline full-time

    Pros

    good hourly pay to start
    great benefits and medical coverage
bonus at the end of the year makes everything almost worth it

    Cons

terrible working schedule. 10:30 to 7pm
    way too much micro-management
Errors, you can't be human, you have to be a robot and be almost perfect

    Advice to Management

please stop being so micro about everything. if you ease up the pressure, then people would actually enjoy working there, but in all fairness, the owner Liz, is not so nice of a lady so I kind of understand

I have been working at Uline full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits including a gym with access to a free personal trainer, full cafe on-site with great food at good prices, access to a salon and masseuse on-site. Solid, fast-paced and private company that is rapidly growing. Great pay for what the job entails. Most employees are great people. They are hard working, detailed, and strong employees.

    Cons

High micro-management environment where every single thing you do is analyzed and scrutinized. Lack of ability to make autonomous decisions without multiple tiers of management for the simplest of tasks. In ability to drive your own processes for improvement or make sounds decisions out of the status quo. Lack of good managers who know how to lead, be change agents or have an appropriate level of emotional intelligence.

Even though it has gotten better in terms of hiring from within, slow to move at growing and encouraging employees to flourish. This company wants to do what they have been doing for 30 years. Typical statement I hear a lot, "if it isn't broke, why fix it?" mentality.

Culture is to pit other departments against each other due to senior executive management style. Lack of communication across departments or trust to work as a team.

    Advice to Management

Give your employees more free will to do their jobs effectively. Uline is hard to get into, they look for very specific people. I suggest they hire more diversely and listen to employee's ideas.

I worked at Uline full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-High end salary for work and industry.
    -Great Benefits.
-Good job right out of college.
-Practical experience in management and coordinating with others.
-Lots of opportunity to develop problem solving skills, and build relationships with some good people
-Your level of interest and input will be a key factor for your success, have to stand out on your own.
-Lots of overtime (If you want the extra money).
-If you like the style in which they run the business, you will do well.
-Programs designed to develop management skills and techniques, along with communication skills.
-End of year bonuses and profit sharing program.

    Cons

-Rigid business approach - Privately/Family owned company, but is very large.
-All decisions flow downward, but are not very receptive to ideas or suggestions sent upward.
-Very slow to adapt, as they are old fashioned. Was just starting the 5 year plan to implement a warehouse ERP when I left. Since everything is mostly done with pen and paper, training employees takes time, and then some tend to just quit, which is wasted time and energy.
-As a business, they boomed with success, however did not plan 5-10 years ahead, and the increase in business put strain on their employees. While their success if impressive, it comes at the cost of the employees well-being, as they are forced to keep up with demand. The company does not hire fast or well.
-Lots of overtime (If you hate staying late).
-Unrealistic hours for warehouse employees, start roughly 10 AM and finish anywhere from 7 -10PM.
-No way of knowing how long your day will be, so from Monday to Friday you cannot make plans (You leave when all the work is done).
-If you do not like taking on unexpected challenges, than this would not work for you, as each day you have to think on you feet and fix many problems as they arise.
-If you disagree with the way they run the company, you will struggle.
-The work environment can be very stressful due to some infrastructure flaws, and there is little work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Look ahead and adapt quicker; be more proactive, less reactive. Create a true 3 shift warehouse schedule, that will help those with families enjoy time during the week. Most employees leave because Monday - Friday is dominated by the job, so free up the schedule to give a better work/life balance. Eliminate certain programs that are designed purely to hit meaningless metrics, that destroy moral in the warehouse. Create more of a culture that empowers employees to be responsible. Some programs/tasks done by leads seem like "hand holding" which I felt made workers felt demeaned, and in turn, destroys the relationship a lead has with his team.
