I worked at University of Alberta full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Inspiring colleagues, excellent benefits and options to take university level classes for cheap. You're surrounded by bright, driven students and you get to help the administrators make their lives better.

    Cons

Budgets at the mercy of the government, some of your clients will be "ivory tower" type academics. The amount of times I've had to explain gmail to award winning tenured professors...

I have been working at University of Alberta full-time

    Pros

Safe place to work. Great group of operators. Benefits are really good. Lots of earned time off opportunity. Job security is very high.

    Cons

Wages are not competitive. Not a lot of opportunities for advancement. No incentive to progress professionally. Lots of turnover. Contribution to pension is non negotiable. Upper management doesn’t see the source and staff providing heat and power for campus as particularly valuable and it shows.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your operators. Don't be so stingy. Communicate better.
