I have been working at University of Derby UK (Less than a year)

    Pros

The University has a good structure and it is well equipped. The labs offer a good environment for the students.

    Cons

The lack of any career plan. As an assistant lecturer, I am unable to get any pos-graduate training, such as PGCertHG, which is just offered for full-time staff (which ironically don't have much free time to dedicate for it).

I have been working at University of Derby UK full-time

    Pros

Supportive colleagues who help each other Parking on site (deducted from salary though) Good students who work very hard Compact site

    Cons

Finance first limiting creativity and quality Short sighted management Bullying culture Wasteful and excessive meeting culture Shocking offices Poor renumeration below sector average Poor admin and management systems Lacking administrative support Top heavy and expensive management structure Limited staff development

    Advice to Management

Invest and value your staff this will reap in a positive student experience. Heavily invested in buildings but lack of staff investment. Thin frontline ... with little support.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at University of Derby UK full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Very happy to be working for this company, you get benefits such as additional days off surrounding Easter and Christmas and some discounts with local companies e.g. Derby Theatre and Georges's Fish and Chips.

    Cons

You have to pay for parking and it is only valid at one site. However it is a small % of your salary so you don't really notice it.

I have been working at University of Derby UK

    Pros

Certain members of the academic and technical staff team are great to work with, they have integrity and a creative dynamism but these are fast disappearing under a culture of managers who are not interested in teaching and learning. I have worked with some brilliant students over the years, some fantastic creative individuals

    Cons

Money driven and not led by a teaching , learning and research agenda. Academics have no say, we are the poorest of the poor and our opinions are not listened to. Bullying managers. No respect for the the curriculum and what the real role of the university should be. Dishonest to staff and students.

    Advice to Management

Start listening to your staff and students.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

It is relatively easy to get a job here due to very low applications. It is conveniently located near the city centre.

    Cons

The university has a strong culture of bullying which is not noticeably immediately, but becomes apparent once the 'honeymoon' phase is over. Managers will stand by and let a lot of things go if it suits there needs. Overall it is a toxic place to work in where employees are not respected.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating employees so poorly and take proactive measures to combat the practice disrespecting others

    Pros

You may not need to be subject mater experts to get a role ...just be close to management

    Cons

All employees are treated differently and there is a lot of favouritism Do not care about high staff turnover Will give you so much stress you will consider leaving

    Advice to Management

Treat staff equally and with respect Pay attention to the reasons behind huge staff turnover

I worked at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

It's easy to get a job there because most vacancies attract a relatively small number of applicants and you won't need a PhD or a research profile to get in. Living costs in Derby are low. Quite good carparking. The campus is all under one roof. Some parts of the University are actually quite good eg. some aspects of Computing, Health, Art, and Education. And most of the students are decent people just trying to get on...

    Cons

Too many to list here. Once in, it's hard to get out except feet first. Rapidly falling applications in many areas and especially business mean that the 'business' (thats how it refers to itself) cannot be sustainable. For more than a decade Derby has not paid staff according to the full pay scale, it 'abolished' the Principal Lecturer grade some years ago. Many middle-ranked staff are on individually negotiated contracts...

    Advice to Management

Do not tolerate bullying or cronyism at any level. Please try to genuinely listen to the staff satisfaction survey - why is it so bad in some areas? Do not blame the staff for the organisation's failings. Poor leadership comes from the top.

I have been working at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

They tend to give tenure straight away like most UK Universities

    Cons

Constant feeling of crisis, falling demand for courses puts a lot of pressure on staff, very poor image and reputation, other Universities will not take you seriously if you have worked here. How can this be a University with such a weak research culture? Not ethical: Has had some questionable overseas alliances in the past (eg. Zimbabwe). pay is out of line with other Universities.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring your friends for senior positions and recruit some real talent.
