I have been working at University of Derby UK for less than a year

    Pros

The University has a good structure and it is well equipped. The labs offer a good environment for the students.

    Cons

The lack of any career plan. As an assistant lecturer, I am unable to get any pos-graduate training, such as PGCertHG, which is just offered for full-time staff (which ironically don't have much free time to dedicate for it).

I have been working at University of Derby UK part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Friendly supportive piers. Good facilities.

    Cons

The current restructure..... It has been going on since 2014 with one failed plan after another. It now looks like a fair amount of staff (once they have been shuffled around to within an inch of insanity) will have to reapply for their own jobs. It seems like each staff member is a just a number not an individual.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff on ground level. Without them the institution would not exist.

I worked at University of Derby UK part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Parking, colleagues who are and are passionate, collegiate culture

    Cons

The University of Derby has become an unpleasant place where 'they' (meaning executives) treat staff like they are the enemy standing in the way of progress. People who ask ethical questions are seen as blockers and once your card is marked, you're relentlessly bullied (or ignored) out. The University has forgotten that academic staff are a talented, engaged bunch of people who, under less despotic leadership, could... get this university somewhere. The university has gone up in the leagues tables but its become Darwinian.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together. Be measured rather than random. Be careful to base your judgements on facts rather than gossip or momentary impression. Get your house in order.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at University of Derby UK full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Renumeration package, benefits, colleagues are friendly and supportive.

    Cons

Little opportunity to advance or develop as a person/employee. Management have no leadership skills, don't know what they want and are generally weak. Pressured to 'live to work' and complete work remotely at home at evenings & weekends. Poor/non-existent strategic planning.

    Advice to Management

Step up, get some proper leadership skills, realise your staff are not the enemy. Proper strategic planning.
