Former Employee - Tutor in Sydney

I worked at University of Sydney part-time

    Pros

The students are brilliant and motivated most of the time

    Cons

Often you have no input on the teaching material and have to fill in gaps left by the lecturer (which can be significant in size)

I have been working at University of Sydney part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexible working environment, higher pay, great super/benefits, huge amount of autonomy for those who 'perform' in their role. Lots of very talented people and for those who are motivated - great opportunities to develop technical skills that can enhance your competitiveness in related fields. Can be involved in impactful and fulfilling research projects at many different levels.

    Cons

A lack of structure and managerial oversight. Almost no performance management (for investigators and more junior staff) and very limited accountability means that it can be difficult to see how and when you can progress through the University system. Interview and hiring process seems to be quite ineffective and promote churn by selection of inappropriate staff - focus seems to be more on credentialism than past performance and how this ties in with the hiring teams needs and aspirations. Most academics and researchers don't seem to have a business/management background and lack the skills to motivate and foster high performance in their teams despite having very talented and capable people. Large grants and funding for projects can be wasted due to lack of oversight and appropriate budgeting - great to have funding but the people spending it don't necessarily have the foresight to efficiently allocate money and prioritise.

    Pros
