I worked at University of Sydney full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people and flexible environment. Lots of reasons to love working here because of the interesting academic work and range of cultural events. The University is trying to change fast, so if you are a professional up for it, great opportunities, but challenging in such a multi stakeholder environment.

    Cons

Very inefficient and high level of administration. The two things together make it a frustrating place to work if you area a professional and have worked in other industries, with okay technology.

    Advice to Management

More demonstration of authentic leadership is required such as making hard decisions and standing by them.

    Too much double up sometimes

I have been working at University of Sydney part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people. The remnants of a public service culture allow for flexible hours.

    Cons

Any hope of returning to 9 - 5 hours amongst professional staff is steadily dwindling as management implement the 'Sydney Operating Model'; a much needed restructure of 40 different operational systems to be implemented over the next 3+ years. Such restructures are performed with no additional support to staff. It is getting very messy. Conscientious staff are denied the fundamental basics to do a good job and take pleasure in hard work.

    Advice to Management

There is only so much workplace 'agility' a human can take. Allow funding for additional support staff during operational redesign.

I have been working at University of Sydney full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

A feeling of contribution to education and research in Australia

    Cons

Bureaucracy, poor management, additional duties constantly being added to the work of hard-working staff members and taken from 'difficult' people (so they are rewarded and often promoted sideways rather than dealt with). It builds resentment amongst the hard-working staff.

    Advice to Management

Insist that all managers have management training, to handle difficult and lazy staff members (instead of dumping all their work on the hard-working staff)
