    Graduate Research Assistant

I worked at Upstate Medical University for more than 5 years

    Pros

The professors are generally very good and make excellent PIs. It is a good place to earn a masters or PhD. The healthcare is also very good.

    Cons

Upstate is a small place University, with no undergrads. This means that you do not have to TA. This is only a downside if you plan on teaching, since you will not get much experience for that.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Upstate Medical University part-time for more than a year

    Pros

The Dean and staff in the COGS are very helpful and excellent at guiding students. Most of the faculty are the same way but there are a few to avoid. Also, the grad students have a union with great benefits.

    Cons

Despite the contract, you will definitely spend a lot of time working in the lab. Once again though, it depends on the professor.

    Advice to Management

Be very careful whose lab you choose. Talk with the students and make sure it is a professor that you will get along with.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Upstate Medical University full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Small, so it easy to get around. Has all the basic resources needed to do research. Starting to renovate and adding to the lab space

    Cons

It is really hard to get the student body to get together and function as a core. It is ever more difficult to try to get faculty to collaborate.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Upstate Medical University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

It is small so it is easy to seek help and advice from colleagues and professors.

    Cons

No work-life balance, time-offs almost impossible depending on lab head. Almost no consideration of the needs of Graduate students.

    Advice to Management

Consider setting a standard across all departments for mandatory time-offs and take considerations of the students and post docs seriously.
