    I worked at VMware full-time

    Pros

Mature, experienced tech company with many amazing products under its belt. Flexible working arrangements, travel opportunities. Culture is mostly positive and vibrant.

    Cons

Far too focused on revenue and numbers rather than their customers' satisfaction or employee development. Work/life balance can easily slip if you let it. Career progression is possible, but very difficult as middle management never move.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time nurturing your staff and making them the best they can be rather than how many billable hours you can get out of them. Focus on customer satisfaction.

I have been working at VMware

    Pros

Nice co-workers, great products, innovative and leading in the business, impressive focus on R & D, decent base salary packages.

    Cons

Middle management only seem interested in the next quarter or the days left of it. No focus on longer term processes and tools. Based on the previous two points, there is no or little consistency for long term business planning. Inconsistency regarding business practices.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the processes and long term when it comes to business, not only product development. Be clearer about the company culture and way forward.

I have been working at VMware full-time

    Pros

Very good company on the outside. Big name, products are very good and competition is almost non-existent, they missed the shot on cloud though. Benefits and perks are exceptional with salaries, free breakfast, ESPP, good work/life balance, social events, access to training, gym

    Cons

Very chaotic on the inside. Amateurish leadership in emea commercial segment and also across the board. Top leadership desperately lacks of charism and don't have a clear strategy, fortunately for them product sells itself. At middle management level, loads of opportunists and brown-nosers that don't care about the people. Bullying culture where personal vendettas are insidiously tolerated or get easily unnoticed,... causing great professional and emotional damage Very hostile environment. Ethics and integrity don't really exist at VMware.

    Advice to Management

STOP the nepotism or stop promoting diversity and inclusion. Most of emea top managers are french and used to work for Business Objects. Some managers even hired their family members in roles they're not qualified for. STOP the amateurism. Promoting unqualified people in key management roles generates a lot of toxicity as they have to micromanage to compensate their mediocrity. STOP relocating services by the means... of redundancies. Relocating support services to Cairo or sales to Barcelona will not help the company to thrive. The cost of training new people and the loss of history and technology knowledge will affect VMware's business, partners and customers in the end.

I worked at VMware full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Excellent growth . Excellent product portfolio. Excellent CEO. Pat Gelsinger the CEO has done an awesome job of taking over the reigns of the company a few years ago and completely turning it around. The stock price has more than quadrupled under his leadership. He has acquired many startups and successfully integrated them into the VMWare product portfolio and eco system. Hats off to him for creating wealth... for the employees, for the owners (EMC and now DELL) and for the investors. One of the finest CEO in the Silicon Valley.

    Cons

Along with these product acquisitions, this company has also acquired managers and middle management who have no idea of what management is. There is no one culture at VMWare. There are as many cultures as the number of startups acquired and the managers of these startups are free to treat their teams as they want. HR is very weak in this company and they are not for you. They are for the managers ... dont rely on... them. I had a short stint at one of these acquired startups called Velocloud. Incompetent management, very high attrition rate. Lot of senior engineers leaving the group. Those who stick around are there to vest their stocks. The founders thinks of themselves to be semi god who will punish you if you decide to leave their kingdom. Their technology stack will teach you nothing. Accept their offer if you cannot find a job somewhere else. Most of these startup managers lack sympathy and empathy and will not hesitate to show you their powers and make you feel that you are a POS compared to them. Dont be fooled by the "100 Best Companies to Work" or "Top paying company" marketing or the campus. It is actually an average paying and a very weak middle management company. Shop around, I am confident you will get a much better offer and a lot better culture, work environment and work life balance. I know people who were offered twice the package they were making at VMWare.

    Advice to Management

Pat: VMWare is doing an awesome job and will continue to do so under your excellent leadership. Fix the culture and HR of this company. Let HR be for the engineers also and not just for the managers.

    Pros

Competitive salary Macbook has been given to all new employees

    Cons

Very poor middle management, the Ethics committee rejects your complaints and lots of office politics. The workforce is very poor technically and I feel this is the worst group of people I've worked in my career.

    Advice to Management

Please make staff engineers report to directors and not to managers and sr. managers. The managers hire poor performing employees from their previous organization and spoil the culture

I worked at VMware full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great WLB. Parking lots are empty at 4:30 or 5:00 PM. and folks come in to work not before 10:00 AM in the morning. Industry leading salaries and bonus (but very poor RSUs). The company moves at a reasonable pace and is very family friendly. The office location and campus for the HQ is awesome. The benefits and perks are also very good. The CEO and his team look to be very competent and genuinely nice... people. The company has a compelling story with VMC on AWS. Hopefully it delivers on that vision or else the company is in for some real tough times.

    Cons

On-prem enterprise software is not a cool technology sector to be in. Because of this perception the company does not attract the best talent anymore. Most of the A level players have left from the engineering ranks to startups or the FANG companies. So co-workers are mediocre at best. Also the company moves at a glacial pace, compared to all the companies working in the cloud - releases in VMware take... months to a year. Its anachronistic in this day and age to have a monolithic technology stack. But with such a large installed base it will be near impossible for the company to pivot. Due to all of the above constraints it is hard to get excited about the technology in the company. A lot of the upper management are from the traditional old companies like Cisco, HP and IBM. This does not inspire confidence in the middle management. The company pays well on the salary and bonus front but the RSU's are significantly lower than what FANG pays. Bottom line VMware is no longer a premium destination for employees. Its more in the same league as a Cisco or Oracle. A tier 3 company at best. Go there if you are looking for a stable company and great WLB.

    Advice to Management

Deliver on the promise of AWS on VMC so that the halo effect from that can help the new initiatives like NSX succeed.

I have been working at VMware full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Unlimited vacation policy, beautiful campus, good cafe.

    Cons

Passive aggressive middle management, cisco-style processes, inability to innovate in QE organizations.

    Advice to Management

Need to hire managers who can protect the interest of their subordinates and can still meet company objectives. Our organization only has people who care about customers and not the employees' ambitions

I worked at VMware full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Some of my team members were great to work with - Building events for birthdays

    Cons

    - Horrible Management (middle management) - Lack of Diversity and Inclusion - Managers (and up) are lacking leadership and education - No room for growth if you are not a part of the boys club - Referrals are a joke - If you a woman of color it is almost impossible to be treated fair and a part of the team.

    Advice to Management

Gain some education, and don't be afraid to let people that are under you grow even if they are better qualified than you are. Particularly to the InfoSec team in Atlanta, there is a lack of diversity, opportunity to grow (even if you have a Master's Degree), and paying people less than what they are worth is disrespectful.
