I have been working at Vanguard full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Great benefits and wonderful coworkers.

    Cons

As an advisor, you’ll be encouraged to get your CFP only to find it’s very hard to move up to the next position, and even if you do, much of your day will be spent on mundane administrative tasks. Even worse, there is an increasing emphasis on metrics. They watch every little keystroke and are constantly adding tasks. It’s sink or swim, where swimming feels like doing the butterfly across the Atlantic. Plus the... pay is low.

    Advice to Management

Try to come up with ways to reward highly performing crew, not just the six out of thousands you single out for a loudly trumpeted extra $20,000 in a year the rest of our lock-step bonuses went down.. And we know the bonuses of upper management went up as we work harder and harder. That created a great deal of ill will toward management. The rumbling is getting louder. Pay attention.

I worked at Vanguard full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Work life balance, work environment, great people with unified mission.

    Cons

Technology is from 1998 or so. Managers consider themselves team members with each other. So conscious on cost cutting that they won't invest in new technology.

    Advice to Management

If PAS clients knew how awful the technology was managing their assets they would leave.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Benefits and work life balance are excellent. Well known company that puts its clients first and keeps the costs low in a high cost environment. Vanguard puts crew member development high on its list. They have great programs for you to get additional professional designation or your masters degree.

    Cons

There is a culture here. If you dont fit the mold upward momentum can be hindered. Metrics are not unfair but can be a little ridiculous at times. Technology is a joke. Systems have constant issues. When they work it's great, when they dont, not so great. The pay depending on department may be less than others in your same career path.

    Advice to Management

Be more clear about the future of the company. Increase the salary of the crew members.

I have been working at Vanguard full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Easy work. Not a whole lot of thought required to work here. Basically a call center environment where the computer does everything for you.

    Cons

Kool-aid factory. Being good at middle school politics will help you get promoted faster than being the smartest on your team. Drink the Kool aid or get out.

    Advice to Management

It would be nice to have managers that have actually held the job for which they are managing. It’s amazing to me that a manger can critique a FA on his or her approach and conversations with clients when that manager never has
