      Dogs, Friday drinks, ok pay

      Cons

Favouritism is rife, some people do nothing and cruise along whilst others work hard and get no recognition. Catty environment with a lot of gossip and bullying. Working in Melbourne is like being in high school. There is the ‘in’ crowd and the ‘out’ crowd. They will find a way to get rid of you if you don’t fit in to their childish ‘culture’. Overhire then fire on mass. Something very fishy going on in this office, ask too many questions and you’re out. Run by petty, lazy, arrogant leaders. It’s ok as a transition job but don’t bother if you want an actual career.

Hi there, Thanks for taking the time to provide a review. I’m sorry to hear that this was your experience. Our Culture at Vend is extremely important to us and we invest a lot of time and focus in ensuring we make everyone feel included and respected and we are continuing to work on this. We don’t believe that your description around overhire then mass fire is an accurate representation of the situation we have just been through. The word ‘fire’ implies folks were doing a bad job, and they weren’t. Our changes were in response to the one of the biggest economic meltdowns in history and we are impacted just like everyone else. Through this process, we have tried to do our very best by our people and will continue to do so. All the best Elissa (People Experience Partner)

      Pros

vend hires friendly and kind ppl that always want to help you in your job culture is always have good time and celebrate each other open to LGBT+ and multi culturalism and diversity

      Cons

managers are not competent and do not know your workload and will work you till you are burned out many managers are robots and do not think on their own and only pass on ideas from executives and vice presidents which makes it very frustrating career grow is very limited in this company so i suggest only take if you need money not because you think will have room to develop product is buggy and customers will be rude to you because the product does not work even though inside vend everyone celebrate product like best thing since slice bread you will not get much support from your managers and you left to figure everything out yourself and if you dont like it i think you should fix new resume instead of try to fix the company there is also bad high school vibe here. if you are the cool kids then you be okay but if not then you will know quickly and you should plan to leave because if you are not in the cool kids club then you will not get anything from the company everyone say they are happy everyday but you talk to them more than 30 minute they tell you that they are stressed and the job is not so good

      Pros

Nice office space, cool gear, lots of little nice perks, a select amount of amazing team members. What seems like a dream job opportunity.

      Cons

The culture here is not what it seems once you are on the inside. First few weeks seem great and everyone is nice but once you get settled its like a fight for survival. If you aren't 'in' with the management team then you find yourself gone very quickly. I have seen some amazing talent come and go. Favouritism is rife and it's like high school gangs. Huge lack of good leadership with poor examples being set by those that are supposed to be the management team. Believing in the vision and working hard means nothing if you aren't 'in' with the old time crew there. What I thought was an opportunity to do good, grown professionally, work with some awesome people turned into a nightmare and a huge kick to my self confidence. Being away from there now really opens your eyes to how bad it really was. The people and culture team are awful and aren't really there to support the people. Feedback isn't taken on board and you are not made to feel like you are part of a team, more like an enemy if you aren't in agreement with the leadership team. They say be open, honest and no silent disagreement, but this isn't what they really want.

      Chief People Officer

Hi there Thanks for taking the time to give us feedback. I am truly sorry that you found this in your time in Vend - it's not ok, and i don't wish this on anyone. Even though it's tough to read, I think you made some fair points. As we have grown in size our employee experience has not been as great as it could be for some. I've recently started at Vend in the Chief People Officer role and my goal is simply to make Vend the best place to work. Recent results suggest we are on the right track - with the score from our engagement survey that was sent out this week up 8 points from where it was six months ago and now sitting above the global technology company benchmark. It's been a journey, but we're feeling good about seeing that positive increase. Our managers and their respective leadership styles are going to constantly evolve, but i do believe that promoting people who show potential vs hiring externally is still a practice we will continue to follow - we want our people to grow at Vend. Sometimes it’s not so smooth for them or their new team, and we are looking at ways we can support them more in this transition. I would love to get more direct feedback on your experience, and any further examples of where we could improve - please email me anytime at pene@vendhq.com.

      Pros

      * Great people (most of them anyway) * Lots of tools that help you work efficiently (and keep work separate from the rest of your life) * Mac gear * You can work from any of the offices * Cool offsites

      Cons

      * High School environment * Some people had leadership positions which they were not qualified for * No real career development * Company is focused on hiring more sales people than actual developers for the software * No benefits (only stock options at the moment) * Lots of talk but no walk

      Vend by Lightspeed Response

Hey there, Thanks for leaving your feedback about what it was like working at Vend. On one hand, we’re glad to hear you acknowledge the positives, but on the other, it sucks to hear you didn’t have a great experience overall. I’d like to share a few insights with regards to some of your points. Vend has just committed to rolling out a comprehensive leadership development programme which encompasses both in person and online training, which we believe will take our leaders to the next level. Our people leaders are hungry for the investment in personal development and we’re stepping up to make this a priority in the coming months. Regardless of a formal program, Vend is a place where people grow into roles as they grow in their careers. We’re sorry you didn’t get what you needed from us. We’ve also just committed to a large increase in our Product and Engineering team size and are currently in the midst of recruiting for these positions. Right now these two teams combined are a comparable size to our sales force although they’re based in New Zealand, so we can see why it might feel like our focus is elsewhere. We have a deep commitment to improving our product and delighting our retailers with it, and an increase in resource in this team will speed up our delivery. The reality is that we know these investments will take time to bear fruit, and there’s a lot of work in the background not everyone sees before it gets to the spotlight. We hope you understand. I hope that this addresses some of your concerns. If you want to share any more direct feedback about your experience at Vend, my email address is jordyn@vendhq.com. You can contact me at any time! Cheers, Jordyn. People Experience Manager - Vend.

      Unprofessionalism at its absolute finest

      Pros

Don't fall for those 5 star reviews posted by management and "People & Culture" (most commonly known as HR). Yes, they offer perks such as having a fully stocked kitchen, letting dogs run free in the office, Apple gear to do your job, birthday celebrations, liquor runs on Fridays, above average salaries, etc. There are a small handful of amazing people who are genuinely nice. It basically seems like anyone's dream job at the start. It stays that way for about 2 or 3 weeks, and then their true colours start to show.

      Cons

I don't know where to start really. The place is full of high school cliques and HR is non-existent. People who sacrifice their time and who try to exceed expectations are put down and under appreciated. Nothing you do is ever good enough. While more senior staff hangs around chit-chatting all day about garbage and personal issues and making fun of customers. There are a few slackers on the management team who will go out and take 2 hour gym breaks, chill on the couches, talk to their friends and pretend they're actually working. The attitudes of a few people in this office, especially on the support team are absolutely disgusting. There may or may not be a couple of people who think they're the best thing since sliced bread. Massive egos. People who like to exercise authority just because they can. Just because they know each other outside of work, a few of them stuck together constantly and are very unwelcoming of new employees. It's like a club that you can't join, and they make it known that they have to accept you first before you're "one of them". theure the worst people I've ever met, and I wouldn't wish my experience on anyone. There are people who don't deserve to be part of the leadership team, but they're promoted anyway because they like to party after work and they fit in socially with management. If you miss one of their forced outings where you're supposed to have "fun", you're labeled as someone who isn't a team player and they'll start second guessing you. If they don't like you for the sake of not liking you, good luck, because you're going to need it big time. Look for a real job at a place that will respect you, because this place knows nothing at all about respect or hard work. Do yourself a favour and stay far, far away.

      People & Culture Manager

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at Vend. While there are some things you thought we could have done better, your perspective on what went wrong is a valuable one, and will help us to foster an even better working environment for current and future employees. Kudos (and thank you!) for acknowledging the perks at Vend. We consider these things basic amenities for a workforce like ours. They’re rooted in giving people flexibility and freedom in doing their job the way they like to do it. It sounds like that freedom was something you felt was perhaps unfair or misused? Vend is a busy and fast-paced place. We know our staff work hard, and not just within your typical 9 to 5 workday. That’s why we afford people the freedom to run their day the way they need to. We’d rather be a results-oriented environment over one that values minutes spent in the office. We put trust in people to do their job well and for those that do take time out of their day, we see them making up for this outside of typical work hours. This freedom is also provided as we're a global company. Toronto managers are often up later connecting with the Auckland or Melbourne office(s), while some folks in Auckland get up a little earlier to collaborate with London workers. We really appreciate this commitment to syncing with one another, even when people are at opposite ends of the globe! We understand everyone is unique, which is why we give folks freedom and trust in the workplace. In saying this, everything we offer is a ‘choose-your-own-level-of-participation’ deal. We don’t want to force perks or team outings on anybody, and we’re sorry that you felt this was the case. Managers are encouraged to utilize entertainment budget in a way that suits everyone, which can be a tall order sometimes. That being said, we certainly do not base staff achievement on their willingness to participate in these external activities. We also know Vend isn’t for everybody. And that’s why we build in 30, 45 and 60 day check-ins with new starts to stay on the pulse of how things are going. Team leads and managers are empowered to run these conversations to ensure targets and learning milestones are being met within someone’s first 90 days at Vend. So in this sense you’re right, HR is non-existent. For issues outside of these conversations, we’re here to support new starts the entire way. We’re cheering them on from the sidelines! But we empower our managers to have meaningful conversations with employees around performance as they’ll know what’s working, or not working, and they know best how to ensure their team is reaching their goals. Once again, thanks for your honesty. There sure are some key takeaways here for People & Culture and we’ll continue working to make Vend an even more amazing place to be. All the best in your next adventure! Take care, Sandra, Toronto P&C

      I don't recommend this place.

      Pros

It basically seems like anyone's dream job at the start. It stays that way for about 2 or 3 weeks, and then their true colors start to show. Vend offers a stocked kitchen, lets dogs run free in the office, Apple gear to do your job, birthday celebrations, Friday's drinks, etc. But don't get too excited about it because it's a "poison gift".

      Cons

Lack leadership/ management In my entire career was in Vend where I "met" the most people with no values. The place is full of high school groups and HR is non-existent. The culture is not what it seems. After first few weeks seem great and everyone is nice but once you get settled it's a fight for survival. If your team leader are not 'in' with you, you find yourself gone very quickly. I have seen some amazing talent come and go. Less than a year 9 people left (The UK office had 24 employees when I started). Vend took more than 6 months to hire a Country Manager for the UK Office. Meanwhile, you were being managed by massive egos living away 8hrs time zone difference using micro management 24/7. Huge lack of good leadership with poor examples by managers and team leaders spending hours on social media, playing ping pong and dreaming about the future. There are people who don't deserve to be part of leadership team but they are promoted anyway because they like to party. Product The product is very limited. In 10 months there was no product development. No career opportunities What I thought it was an opportunity to do good, help retailers, grown professional, work with some awesome people turned into a nightmare. They say to be open, honest and no silent disagreement, but it's not what really happens. People are only taken seriously based on how many years they stayed in Vend and not the quality of your work. My advice Do yourself a favor, and look for a real job where people respect, invest in you and help you be a better professional. You won't learn and build your career in Vend.
