I have been working at Viacom Media Networks as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Internships are paid, which is hard to come by in media
    - The HR department makes a huge effort to engage with interns throughout the semester and provide opportunities to help interns prepare for the job search
    - Supervisors tend to be young and very friendly
    - A diverse array of networks and departments you can be placed in

    Cons

    - Depending on your department/network, there may be significant limits to what you're actually allowed to work on or observe. This wasn't the case for me, but some of my peers have expressed these frustrations in their own departments

Worked in Beijing. First Internship in my life. Realy cool experience. Not much work. Doing Slides and excels.

    Cons

Too far from the center of Beijing. Need to take subway everyday.

    Advice to Management

    Should be more sales driven.

I have been working at Viacom Media Networks (Less than a year)

    Pros

I've had a few entertainment industry internships before MTV, and I have enjoyed my time here. There is plenty of respect between employees, and office camaraderie is evident. As an intern, I am encouraged to ask questions and be proactive. Primarily, I read scripts, watch cuts, and carry out basic administrative tasks.

    Cons

Some of the promises made during the interview process and early days of the internship have not been followed up.

    Advice to Management

You can totally expect more out of the interns - we're here to work. It would be nice to sit in on more interesting meetings.

I worked at Viacom Media Networks (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Learned from other employees, both interdepartmental and those who shared the wing
    -Free swag/event opportunities
-No getting coffee for other employees
-Insight on how things operate cross departmentally and from start-to-finish
    - Summer hours (Friday's off)

    Cons

-Internship sponsor was uninterested in sponsoring/mentoring (leave for the day without saying anything)-Sponsor showed minimal guidance (i.e. vague timeline / minimal direction)
    - No pay

    Advice to Management

Please make sure the sponsor is capable and willing to be in charge of an intern. It definitely makes or breaks the internship experience.

I worked at Viacom Media Networks as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The experience I was able to gain was very helpful for later in my career. Everyone was very welcoming, supportive and passionate about their job. I enjoyed the perks of working for MTV and getting to work with the best and the brightest

    Cons

The hours at times were long and difficult. I wasn't always sure there was clear vision for what I was working on. It was difficult to know which projects were supposed to be priority over other projects because there were so many

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to create a better flow for projects, to make sure that which is being worked on it priority. Try focusing on fewer projects and make them great, as opposed to tackling so many different items

I worked at Viacom Media Networks (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very cool office. Low workload (also a con). Also, being able to put MTV / Viacom on my resume led to more opportunities down the road. Incredibly friendly HR staff as well.

    Cons

Almost no useful / educational / interesting tasks were given in the CMI department internship. Despite my best efforts, I wasn't able to learn much about the industry or the company. I mostly sent off pre-written emails for an executive assistant and never even saw the head of the department. Opportunities to assist higher level employees, sit in on more legit work, etc. were slim to none.

    Advice to Management

You hire smart capable interns. Treat them like such, wasted resource there. Exit interviews with interns might be a good thing both for recruiting good talent and learning how to better utilize interns.

    Pros

Cool working environment. Lots of young people, and all the floors have different designs. I interned with the production management department, so there were lots of cool shoots to go on-- movie premieres, American Idol events, etc.

    Cons

There are so many interns, that employees don't really know what to do with them. Most days I just sat at my desk and was bored. MTV tries to create a feeling like they were going to help outstanding interns get a job, but that is just not true. Most employees in production management stay there forever, and an openings go to friends or family.

    Advice to Management

Your internship program is too big. Make it more exclusive so the interns actually get a great experience rather than being the errand boy for everyone, including the PAs... who should be the errand boys.
