I worked at Waitrose & Partners part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good people to work with, the management were easy to get a long with - i never had any problems. You get good discount with both Waitrose and John Lewis.

    Cons

There was not really any cons to working here. Unfortunately it was not somewhere i wanted to progress in, only because I had set out my career choice prior to working at Waitrose.

I have been working at Waitrose & Partners full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexibility of retail - shift swaps, different hours, working across different departments. When we did get a bonus. Discount in John Lewis. Discount in cinema's, discount in certain restaurants (bills, byron, hard rock).

    Cons

Bonus is getting smaller each year, this year getting none - which is one of the benefits of the partnership and is meant to make up for the fact we are paid less hrly than other supermarkets. Management are the biggest problem, they encourage change but never follow through, they continue to baby employees who don't want change or who don't support the business when it comes to hours, flexibility, training further, cross training, showing willingness and wanting to see the business grow. Communication lacks - each branch runs very very very differently, therefore general training lacks and people get stuck in there ways. Having to put my holidays in a year or more in advance but most likely not getting them as I don't have children (esp around school holidays) or students not getting there holidays ( to cover exams/dissertations), we end up getting allocated them and there is no flexibility to move. If for whatever reason the end of the year comes and we haven't used all our hols/BH hours we loose them, we don't get paid them or get to carry them over into next year although we put them in and they get rejected for many reasons - too short notice ( even though its a few months and the whole point of retail is OT and part times can pick up extra shifts or hire seasonal temps to cover holidays). The communication between head office and branches is none existent, our bonus that we supposedly aren't getting we haven't heard a thing, branch closures which have been rumors for years are still floating around no information given. Mentioning the pay again, the benefits we receive (JL discount, waitrose discount, bonus etc) aren't really that beneficial for Scottish partners for example, all hotel discounts, travel discounts, sightseeing discounts are down south. Shift wise, when you are full time fully flex if you are student age (18 - 26) or are not a parent (unless you get lucky) are most likely to be given the worst shifts, 5 backshifts in a row, backshifts into opens, find yourself working every friday backshift, backshifts when its your weekend in. Normally i love a backshift and its understandable there will be holidays, sick days, cover for shifts needed however this isn't just once a month or two or every now and then this is just the way it is i have found in the few stores i have worked in. You will find yourself carrying a lot of work in your department or various departments you work in, whether this is product knowledge, lots of hours and shifts to help benefit the business, customer service, helping to train more staff to your ability, normally this is fine but when it comes to the pay review once a year and you either stay the same or only slightly rise you find yourself annoyed. Annoyed by partners who don't share your enthusiasm, your motivation or your workload being paid the same or in some cases more than you, sometimes its because "they have worked in the partnership so long" however does time really measure standards?
