Invaluable development and experience at pace

      Pros

I always say TransferWise is like a new company every 6 months - we’re scaling so fast. That means new projects, challenges and development opportunities all the time. Despite the chaotic nature of this your learning will be continued and rapid and if you want to get stuck in it’s a great place to build your career and take steps up the ladder much faster than in a lot of companies. You’re trusted. If you can explain the rationale behind your vision, you can back it up with data and also reflect if you fail - TransferWise will trust and support you to build things how you see fit.

      Cons

Growing at scale is tiring. Things need to be built from scratch. Many of the tools you’d have had at your finger tips in previous people team roles need building. You can’t tell people to help you or do what you want them to do, they have to buy in. Although all the above can be seen as pros - you know anything you build has to be meaningful and prove impact and you can shape it how you want - plus it will feel easy anywhere else.

      Pros

-Wise is a super diverse and fair company, giving equal opportunities and salaries to different nationalities and genders. Wise is liberal, deeply against discrimination and racism, which is super great -The community is amazing, everyone has a superb attitude; everyone helps each other, everyone is open to feedback (both negative and positive), and we all work together, as a team to achieve something big and make both our customers and employees life better. -There are great benefits, like a monthly office lunch credit, company shares after some time, generous salaries, paid travel benefits etc -Growth and improvement is highly encouraged, with separate budget for relevant courses and learning; working towards promotions is always supported, salary benchmarks with raises happen every 6-12 months, and rewards are given based on performance.

      Cons

-The company is becoming more and more corporate-style, meaning that the "lower levels" and positions have less and less power to change everyday work; expenses are cut from the places it's most needed (like recruiting to lower level positions, to ensure that those teams have enough people to ensure a positive work mentality); money is gaining more and more importance in the company, leaving less space for family-like atmosphere, working together, regarding everyone equally etc. -As we grow, more and more people around the world uses us, but the staff doesn't seem to grow equally -Customer Support Agents have to work more and more every month and it doesn't seem to change greatly...

Great if you want to work independently

      Pros

      - Amazing people, everyone is really nice and welcoming - They make sure you are set-up for success and care a lot about the happiness and performance of their employees - Very flat hierarchical structure means you can make immediate impact - Work/Life balance is great - Autonomous teams mean you can choose what to work on and can focus on what's most impactful & interesting. - They're constantly working on improving and are aware of areas where things are not as good as they could be

      Cons

Autonomous teams can have it's downsides. Certain processes are not owned by anyone in particular and can get lost. A lot of communication is needed to get certain things done which can be frustrating to some.

Great for people who loves ownership

30 May 2021 - Engineering Lead in Singapore

      Pros

The engineering teams at Wise are empowered to make all sort of decision, they are always on the driver seat when it comes to product development and the roadmap. If you care about a cause/pain-point or whatsoever nobody can stop you from owning it and solving it (this is true even for non-engineering functions). Teams and people are very nice to work with and are respectful which makes collaborating a breeze. I think it's one of the best places for the people who want to own their career as you've complete autonomy over it.

      Cons

Autonomy comes with responsibilities, you might initially find it hard to see the lines between the ownership of different functions, essentially a side-effect of autonomous teams, but with enough time/practice it's not that hard to get hold of.

      Impactful and challenging

1 May 2021 - Engineering Lead in Tallinn

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Because of the autonomous culture, as a single person you can have massive impact on our customers and the company - The people are great - supportive, smart, diverse and call each other out when we're not having an impact on the mission - The potential of the company is massive - Encouraged to take risks and learn (in a safe framework)

      Cons

      - Can be very stressful at times - International finance is very challenging - if you haven't worked in fintech before expect to worry about much more regulation and risk which will slow you don. - Easy to get lost in the work and massively overwork - Autonomous teams lead to a lot of chaos, if you can't create order for yourself you will not do very well
