We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Councillor Waseem Zaffar. Over many years, we have had the privilege of working closely with Cllr Zaffar on a range of initiatives that strengthened our communities across Birmingham. His passion for improving the lives of local people and his commitment to social justice was clear in every conversation and every project we collaborated on. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, colleagues, and the many communities he helped shape for the better.
We’re working with Equans UK & Ireland to deliver our Homes for Modern Living programme, a record £300m investment to transform some of our least energy-efficient homes. Together, we’re delivering a mix of retrofit measures and aesthetic improvements that will make homes warmer, more affordable, and fit for the future, while preserving their character. This is a partnership that will make a real difference for local people and places. More updates to come as we progress through the programme… Watch the video below to find out more and read the full case study.
We’re proud to have supported Birmingham Crisis Centre, our Charity of the Year, through a Christmas gift campaign for women and children staying at the centre. Our Deputy Chief Executive Joe Reeves visited the centre to deliver more than 150 donated gifts, ensuring every woman and child receives a present this Christmas. A big thank you to our colleagues for donating brand‑new, wrapped gifts, and to our contractors EQUANS, Novus Property Solutions, Lovell Partnerships Ltd and TMA Property Maintenance for their generous involvement and support. Alongside the gifts, our colleagues also raised over £900, helping Birmingham Crisis Centre continue its vital work supporting women and children escaping domestic abuse.
Last week, we brought together our involved tenants, our Chief Executive Glenn, and our Executive Director of Tenancy Services Daren for a special Christmas get-together. Our involved tenants volunteer their time to help shape and improve our services, taking part in everything from surveys and reviews to contractor meetings and business-wide projects, ensuring tenant feedback drives real change. The get-together was an opportunity to thank them for their contributions, review this year’s successes, share plans for the year ahead, and celebrate the difference their voices have made. The best part? Hearing what this journey has meant to them: “This year has been transformational. You’re raising the bar.” “What a breath of fresh air it is to be a Midland Heart tenant at this time.” “I’ve never felt so listened to. It’s given me a purpose and real joy to see it working.” “Someone asked ‘what would you do if you became millionaire?’ Well, I’m staying in my house, I couldn’t be happier with my home right now.” We look forward to achieving more together in 2026. Last week we held our 2025 STAR Awards in central Birmingham. Always a huge highlight of our year, the awards saw over 30 remarkable colleagues and teams shortlisted across eight categories. Our STAR Awards are more than just a celebration, they reinforce our values and commitment to our #MHMindset. They also serve as a platform to spotlight excellence, recognise outstanding contributions, and celebrate colleagues and teams who go above and beyond. A huge congratulations to our 2025 winners and everyone who was shortlisted! Here's a snapshot of photographs from the event.
Last week, we brought together our Property Services contractors and tenants for a collaborative workshop led by our Executive Director of Property Services, Sayeed H. We spent time reviewing tenant feedback, complaints, and Ombudsman findings, turning them into actionable improvements. By sharing best practice and listening to real experiences, we’re working to deliver services that truly meet tenants’ needs. Each contractor also made an individual pledge to improve the services they deliver for tenants, a clear commitment to making a real difference. This is just the start. Our corporate plan, Tenants at Heart, was shaped by conversations with our tenants, and that dialogue isn’t over. We’re committed to making sure their insight and ideas continue to influence how we deliver and improve our services.
We’re delighted to publish our 2024/25 Tenant Annual Performance Report. This year’s report provides a summary on how we’re performing when it comes to the things our tenants tell us are most important to them, and what we’re doing to make improvements based on their feedback. You can read the report on our website.
We’re deeply saddened by the news of Baroness Helen Newlove’s passing. Baroness Newlove was a passionate advocate for victims and a driving force for safer communities. Her courage and determination changed the way victims’ voices are heard within the justice system. We were privileged to work alongside her through the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Anti-Social Behaviour. Her insight and leadership helped shape its work, including championing practical solutions like problem-solving housing courts to tackle anti-social behaviour and protect communities. We’re grateful for everything she contributed to making communities safer and our heartfelt thanks and thoughts are with her family and loved ones.
We're thrilled to share that we have been awarded the British Safety Council’s Sword of Honour, a prestigious recognition of our commitment to health and safety excellence. This follows our five-star rating in the Council’s Occupational Health and Safety Audit, reflecting best practice across the organisation, from our frontline teams to our leadership. Our safe working practices are central to how we protect people, build trust and deliver services our tenants can be confident in. A huge well done to all!
