My actions if one my Grade 6 team members received a phone call from a PI about a late grant application, which my staff felt was not of sufficiently high quality and would benefit from improving and submitting next year

I would write to the PI explaining the risks involved in submitting late (without a review in Research Office), as well as a weak application, and outline support available to improve it and submit in the next round
