I try to combine different concepts and use opportunities to get students to think critically. For example I had a student write even numbers then pick two even numbers to add. For reading stories, I pick a topic to write about based on the story. I also use hands on teaching for example I have lesson where students will read about plant function then draw a plant and label the parts
