Opengear is a global leader secure, resilient remote management of critical IT infrastructure. Our solutions are trusted by tech unicorns and Fortune 100 enterprises to ensure uptime across sophisticated data centers, remote edge sites, and everything in between.
We are a global company, with a Brisbane, Australia based engineering team and Sandy, Utah based Operations team. Join us in designing the next generation of infrastructure management platforms to power hyper-scale AI data centers.
Position
We are looking for an Embedded Systems & Test Engineer to join our Brisbane hardware team. This role sits at the intersection of hardware bring-up, system-level test development and lab operations — and it is a role for someone who likes to make things work reliably, repeatedly and measurably.
You will take focused ownership of appliance testing during product development — stress testing, longevity testing, functional and feature test coverage, and supporting software testing with automated physical testing. This role is also a natural integration point for testing-related improvements driven by other engineering roles: when the electrical or mechanical engineers develop new test rigs, fixtures or automation tooling, this role is the person who picks those up and puts them to work. The broader appliance testing team’s remit extends to contract manufacturer testing, final assembly quality assurance, compliance testing and field self-test — areas where your work here has positive downstream impact, though day-to-day you will be focused on the Brisbane development testing scope.
This position is based in Brisbane, Australia
What You Will Do
System-Level Test Development
- Write and extend Python-based test scripts and pytest frameworks to validate product behaviour at a system level during hardware development
- Interface with a range of test equipment via Python or standard APIs — including oscilloscopes (Keysight), VNAs (Pico), spectrum analysers, programmable power supplies, RF switches, DAQs, environmental chambers and bench multimeters
- Develop and document test coverage analysis for new hardware builds, working with firmware and hardware engineers to identify test gaps
- Support the integration of development-phase test flows with existing manufacturing test frameworks, in collaboration with the Senior Firmware Test Engineer
Cellular and Advanced Network Testing
- Develop skills in cellular network simulation and testing using Amari Callbox LTE/5G test equipment — an exciting technical growth area for this role
- Serve as the dedicated appliance-level testing focus within the Brisbane team — the person hardware and firmware engineers can hand testing work to, collaborate with on test coverage, and look to for continuity and improvement between product development cycles. This is a domain ownership role: you bring focused attention and accumulated knowledge to testing so that senior design engineers can stay on design work
- Contribute to the team's ability to test Opengear's cellular and network resilience capabilities in a controlled lab environment, supporting both design validation and regression testing
Physical Interface Test Automation
- Help build out a physical test automation capability that enables hardware interfaces to be exercised without manual intervention — a key enabler for continuous integration, design validation and production quality assurance
- Examples of physical automation targets include: USB interface and flash drive testing, reset button actuation, LED indicator state and timing verification, power supply disconnection and recovery via programmable PDUs
- Collaborate with colleagues across hardware, firmware and systems engineering to design and implement automated physical test rigs that can be integrated into CI pipelines and used for longevity and stress testing
- The automation capability you build here has direct positive impact on quality assurance testing flows at our final assembly production lines — while production line operations are managed by the Sandy team, improvements to test automation and repeatability developed in Brisbane flow through to manufacturing quality
Manufacturing and Operational Test Support
- Provide technical support for operational testing at contract manufacturers, including documentation of test procedures, failure modes and acceptance criteria
- Investigate and triage quality issues arising from manufacturing or box-build assembly, escalating to hardware or firmware engineers with clear reproduction steps and data
- Contribute to the development of test plans and work instructions suitable for use by manufacturing operators
Longevity and Accelerated Ageing Testing
- Take ownership of establishing a structured programme of longevity and accelerated ageing tests for our product range — drawing on available equipment including our environmental test chamber. This is a genuine opportunity to build something from the ground up, with real impact on product quality and field reliability
- Research applicable test standards and approaches, develop proposals and present recommendations to the team — driving prioritisation and formalisation of the programme over time
- Run endurance test cycles, monitor results and record findings systematically
Hardware Lab Operations
- Take day-to-day ownership of the hardware lab — ensuring it is safe, organised, well-labelled and functional
- Maintain and track consumables (cables, connectors, PCBs, tooling, solder, etc.), raising replenishment requests to the manager before stock runs low
- Maintain test equipment in working order: monitor calibration status, identify faults, and coordinate repair or replacement
- Research, propose and implement improvements to lab equipment, tooling and processes — with budget and purchasing managed by the engineering manager
- Examples of the kind of improvements this role owns: commissioning new bench instruments, improving cable labelling and storage, 3D printing custom cable retention and rack accessories, implementing location tracking for shared assets
PLM and Team Contribution
- Participate in PLM workflows including reviewing change requests and contributing to ECOs — particularly for test-relevant changes to hardware
- Maintain test documentation in a state suitable for handover and audit
Who You Are and What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electronics, or a closely related discipline
- Proficiency in Python — able to write, read and debug scripts confidently, including interfacing with hardware over VISA/serial/TCP
- Solid foundational understanding of embedded systems — GPIO, UART, SPI, I2C, USB, Ethernet — sufficient to write tests that exercise hardware interfaces
- Practical Linux experience — navigating the command line, writing shell commands, understanding networking basics
- Methodical approach to testing and documentation — you record what you did, what you found, and what it means
- Initiative and self-direction: able to identify the next thing to do, make progress, and flag blockers clearly
Desired Skills
- Experience with pytest or similar structured test frameworks
- Exposure to automated hardware test using Python instrument control (pyvisa, serial, paramiko, etc.)
- Familiarity with RF test concepts and equipment (spectrum analysers, VNAs, RF switches)
- Exposure to cellular network technologies (LTE/5G) or cellular test equipment (Amari Callbox or similar) — not expected, but a genuine differentiator
- Experience designing or operating automated physical test rigs (relay boards, PDUs, actuators for button/switch control, camera-based indicator monitoring)
- Experience with environmental test chambers or accelerated life testing
- Interest in formalising and documenting test standards — even if from a university project or personal background
- Experience in a lab technician, test technician or similar hands-on technical role
