## Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled and detail-oriented Database Administrator to join our team and take ownership of the design, implementation, and ongoing management of our database systems. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the integrity, security, and performance of organisational data assets. This role suits a proactive and technically proficient professional with a strong background in database management and a commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality data infrastructure. Experience working within a collaborative IT environment and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders will be highly regarded.
## Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain database architecture, data structures, tables, and naming conventions to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and completeness of all data master files
- Establish, monitor, and maintain backup and recovery procedures, ensuring business continuity and minimal disruption in the event of a system failure
- Implement and enforce database security protocols, integrity controls, and access management policies to safeguard sensitive organisational data
- Administer and maintain comprehensive database documentation, including guidelines, policies, and operational procedures, ensuring these remain current and fit for purpose
- Plan and perform database upgrades, patches, and migrations, including thorough testing, debugging, and issue resolution in accordance with approved quality assurance processes
- Monitor database performance on an ongoing basis, identifying bottlenecks and implementing tuning, indexing, and optimisation strategies to maximise efficiency
- Collaborate with developers, systems analysts, and business stakeholders to translate data requirements into effective and scalable database solutions
- Analyse existing database systems and workflows, recommending and implementing improvements to enhance reliability, performance, and maintainability
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance for database-related incidents, working to resolve issues promptly and minimise operational impact
- Ensure database environments comply with relevant data governance frameworks, privacy legislation, and organisational standards, including alignment with Australian Privacy Principles where applicable
- Assist in capacity planning activities by assessing current usage trends and forecasting future storage and performance requirements
- Support the development and maintenance of data integration processes, including ETL pipelines and data warehouse environments, in collaboration with cross-functional teams
## Required Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated experience in a Database Administrator or similar role, with hands-on responsibility for managing enterprise-level database environments
- Proficiency in one or more leading relational database management systems, such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, or PostgreSQL
- Strong working knowledge of SQL, including query writing, stored procedures, functions, and performance tuning
- Experience designing and implementing backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies in production environments
- Solid understanding of database security principles, including user access controls, encryption, and audit logging
- Ability to diagnose and resolve complex database performance issues through monitoring tools, execution plans, and indexing strategies
- Familiarity with data modelling techniques and the ability to translate business requirements into well-structured database designs
- Sound understanding of IT service management practices and experience working within structured change management processes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a methodical approach to troubleshooting
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to liaise confidently with both technical teams and business stakeholders
## Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant vendor certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Oracle Database Administrator Certified Professional, or equivalent
- Experience with cloud-based database platforms, including Azure SQL, Amazon RDS, or Google Cloud SQL
- Exposure to NoSQL database technologies such as MongoDB, Cassandra, or Redis
- Experience in data warehousing environments and familiarity with ETL tools and processes
- Knowledge of scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or Bash for automation of routine database tasks
- Familiarity with DevOps practices and experience working within Agile or ITIL-aligned environments
- Prior experience in a regulated industry such as finance, healthcare, or government, with an understanding of associated compliance obligations
